Indians cling to second place
Challenge . . .
Mustangs escape on a
whistle and a bobble
By Tracy R. Mesler
Friday’s tense District 8-
AA showdown with the
Lady Mustangs of City View
came down to one bad call
by the officials - as both
teams were afraid of
throughout an evening of
questionable calls - and one
bad play by the Indians as
City View skipped and
jumped and shouted their
way off Nocona’s floor with
a 51-50 victory.
Nocona’s stifling defense
threatened to choke the life
out of the Mustangs in the
first quarter holding City
View to 2 points, both off
free throws, and building a
10-2 led.
But the Mustangs had a
plan, and while senior guard
Kealy Walker was 4 of 6
from the floor in the first
period, her teammates were
1 of 10. And that failure to
strike while on a roll cost
Nocona as the Mustangs
erupted for 20 second period
points, including 8 of 14 free
throws, to seize a 22-18 lead
at the half as Walker’s hot
touch left her and mounting
foul problems left four Lady
Indians with 2 or 3 fouls
each.
Frustrated at the turn of
events, Nocona opened the

second half with a barrage of
well executed 3 point
attempts.
With the Mustangs track-
ing Walker’s every move,
she and fellow senior start-
ing guard Jalyn Blevins kept
locating a well placed Macy
Marshall who went 4 for 4 in
the 19-10 third quarter
including three 3 pointers.
Walker and Blevins each
dropped home a long dis-
tance shot as Nocona tried to
force the Mustangs into
guarding outside and open-
ing up the inside game.
But City View’s quick-
ness proved to be the differ-
ence in the game with 14
steals, most of them coming
on attempts to pass the ball
inside to posts Jacie Mitchell
and Reagan Barrett.
City View clawed its way
back into the game in the
fourth period capitalizing on
a cold shooting touch by the
Indians (4 for 14) and some
unexpectedly hot shooting
by MaKayla Ramirez who
went 3 for 5 from the comers
to account for 9 of City
View’s 19 points in the peri-
od.
Rameriez’s second bomb
fell with 1:33 to play to cut
the lead to 50-46. The teams
traded missed shots until she
connected one last time to
cut the lead to a single digit
with 35 seconds to play.
Nocona called timeout
with 29 seconds to go. Then
after inbounding the ball to
Walker, Nocona’s strongest
guard was dribbling parallel
to the midcourt line when
she was pinched by two
Mustang defenders hoping to
force a turnover or commit a
foul to try to get to the
bonus. Instead of the foul,

Eagles win
MONTAGUE — The
Montague Lady Eagles host-
ed Forestburg on Monday,
Jan 20 winning a tough one
37-20. The Lady Eagles once
again had to play very
aggressive defense to shut
down the Forestburg attack
and had to break through
traffic all night long.
“I am so proud of how my
girls composed themselves,
how well they worked as a
team, how hard they hustled
and how smart they played,”
Coach Cromleigh says,
“When we play Forestburg
we have to be ready for any-
thing. I am proud of this win
for the girls!”
Reagan Wilson- 2 rebounds

championship.

View 30-20, Bowie 37-28

Horns prevail
MONTAGUE — On the
boy’s side, the Montague
boys hustled and played hard
all game long but just could-
n’t match up against
Forestburg’s transition game
and quickness. “There were
bright spots though as
Montague leams something
every time they suit up and
hit the floor- they fight, they
hold their heads high, and
they keep believing-
patience is a virtue and the
boys wont quit, they will
keep on fighting and one day
it will happen- they will pre-
vail!” Coach Cromleigh
says, “We all have to start
somewhere and believing is
a win in itself!”
Game stats:
Dalton Atteberry- 12
points, 2 steals, 1 rebound
and 1 assist; Osias Atayde- 3
points, 4 steals, 2 assists and
2 rebounds; Connor Sears- 2

trict title.

View 37-24, lost to Bowie
38-49, and downed Henrietta
31-30 while winning the
Nocona Tournament by
defeating Lindsay 35-29 and
Muenster 30-28.
The B team lost to Bowie

in a nail-biter 11-10.

night 62-34 as the short-
handed tribe fought hard.
Marcus Carter led
Nocona with 15 points.
Bray den Skinner added 8,

called for traveling!
With a sudden, last
chance, the Mustangs
responded as Latichia Smith
hit a base line shot with 12
seconds to go to give City
View the lead.
As Nocona hustled the
ball across the midcourt line
Grigsby called timeout with
6:02 to play. When no Lady
Indians got open for the
inbounds pass, he called
another timeout. But again
no Indian got open for the
pass and the same official
quickly whistled a five sec-
ond violation giving the ball
to City View.
The Mustangs simply had
to get the ball into play
twice, drawing non-shooting
foul along the way, to run
out the clock and escape the
gym with a win.
For City View, it was jus-
tice as the Mustangs saw
Nocona storm back from a
20 point deficit in City View
and win the game on two
technical free throws in the
closing seconds when their
long-time coach called time-
out when she had none.
Walker finished the night
with 19 points, 5 rebounds, 3
steals and 4 assists.
Marshall added 14 points,
4 rebounds, 2 steals and 3
assists.
