Impossible to make an A?
To have items published in the calendar, call Tami
Hall at 481-5656. The deadline is 10 a.m. Thur-
sday the week before the scheduled events.
Editor, South Belt Leader:
On Sept. 10,1981, my son told me his
teacher said it was no longer possible
for him to receive an A on his report
card. I called his Special Education
Teacher (Mrs. Plaisance, , Freeman
Elementary) to get further details on
this story. She verified this was correct.
She stated that the PISD Special Educa-
tion Department had modified their
program to give As only to Special
Education students who could meet the
curriculum of the students in regular
classes. I told her this did not seem fair
to me because my son was making As in
his class hist year. She said the teachers
were told not to give any Special Educa-
tion students As and to stress the value
of Bs. She said she realized this was
going to be hard on the students who
were receiving As in the past.
She also stated that there were regu-
lar students who were doing the best
they could and only receiving Ds and
Fs. When I asked why these students
were not placed in Special Education
when they were not able to keep up with
the regular students, she stated that
there was only so much room for Special
Students and the State had certain
standards for them to meet in order to
qualify for Special Education.
When I stated that I did not feel these
policies were fair to the students, she
suggested I contact the Special Educa-
tion Department of PISD. I felt before I
did this, I needed more expert help and
I immediately thought of the South Belt
Leader.
Any help you can give me in advising
other parents of Special Education stu-
dents in the PISD would be greatly
appreciated.
