Queens 41
Thompson’s eighth grade
light team used a strong quar-
ter to pull away from Queens
57-41 last week to extend their
win streak to seven games.
Arnold Todd and Wade
Britt keyed the Lion victory
with good play offensively and
defensively. Todd led the team
in scoring with 17 points and
played a key role in the team’s
strong defensive effort. Britt
helped out in the scoring
column by hitting for 14
points, mostly from the inside.
Thompson led early and
held a 33-22 halftime lead
before Queens pulled to within
two points as the fourth quar-
ter began. But the Lions held
the Hornets to just two points
in the final period while
Thompson eased past the
Hornets.
The Lions hit 20-44 shots
from the field and 17-21 from
the free throw line.
Lance Green finished with
eight points for the Lions,
while teammate Arnold
Vasquez added six and Hoa
Ngo and Chris Perry tallied
four points each. Greg
Williams and Chris Nava also
scored two points apiece for
Thompson.
Lion coach Mike Garrison
summed up the victory as a
result of team-play. “All the
players worked well as a unit
and this was probably the
most important key to the
win,” Garrison said.

enabling them to hold onto the
lead.
As a team, Thompson hit
on only 16-62 from the floor
and the Hornets held the lead
from the beginning. Queens
led 10-6 after the first quarter
and 21-19 at halftime. The
Hornets upped that margin to
33-30 by the end of the third
quarter and outscored their
hosts 16-11.
Thompson’s Johnny Bolen
scored 30 points with 13-33
from the floor, while Tommy
Hulsey, Shawn Richmond,

Cruz all tossed in two points

one point apiece.
The Lions are 5-2 on the
year after the loss and 15-3
overall.

ticked off the clock. Jaime
Fernandez and Mike O’Con-
nor led the Bears in scoring
with 11 points apiece. Ray
Alleq added 10 points to the

The Hornets jumped out to
a 16-0 lead after the initial
period and although they out-
scored Thompson in just one
other quarter, the 16-point
margin held up.
Thompson cut the deficit to
28-17 by halftime and the two
teams battled to an 11-11 draw
in the third frame. Queens put
the game out of reach in the
final quarter with a 12-6
margin.
Eddie Noles and Steve
Aguirre were the Lions’ top
offensive players while Tim
Carnes and Noles took charge
of the defense.

a 17-4 advantage.
Carl Heinrich, Bill Romere,

Tournament
Bev. HiUs
Beverly Hills’ eighth grade
combined light and dark lost
to Southmore in the cham-
pionship game of the Bon-
nette Tournament in Deer
Park over the weekend.
Southmore slipped past the
Bears 46-32 after the Bears
knocked off Miller, Bonnette
and Queens in order to reach
the finals.
Mike O’Connor tallied 57
points in the four games and
was voted to the All-Tourna-
ment team.
Beverly Hills opened the
tourney by beating Miller 43-
30 with Ray Allen topping the
scoring for the Bears. Allen
tossed in 10 points and
O’Connor added seven in a
balanced scoring attack.
Ricky Gusler added to the
victory with five assists and
Zul-tan Jackson added four.
Terry Fontenot had four
steals, while O’Connor and
Jackson added six rebounds to
help the Bears dominate the
game statistically.
The Bears won their second-
round game by 27 points over
hosts Bonnette, thanks to 18
points from O’Connor, eight
from Fontenot and seven from
Glen Davis. In the 58-25 vic-
tory, O’Connor also had three
assists and grabbed 11
rebounds to go along with two
steals.
Jackson dished out five
assists while copping five
thefts and pulling down seven
rebounds, and Butch Mark-
wardt had three assists.
Manuel Guerrero came up
with two steals, and Fontenot
had four for the game.
Queens posed a definite
threat to Beverly Hills’ path to
the championship. The Bears
had to battle hard for a 35-32
win in the semifinals. O’Con-
nor penetrated well in the
defensive struggle. His 19
points were the highlight and
Fontenot added seven to the
total.
Beverly Hills led 17-15 at
the half and added to that
margin by one point in the
third period before both teams
emerged with nine points in
the final period.
Davis, Guerrero and Jaime
Fernandez were top defensive
players in the game.
But the Bears could not get
past the Bulldogs in the finals
despite 13 points from
O’Connor and nine from
Allen. O’Connor also had
nine rebounds in the game,
while Jackson came up with
six caroms and was credited
with three assists. Fontenot
grabbed four steals to lead the
Bears on defense.
Beverly Hills led 12-11 at
the end of one quarter but lost
the lead in the second stanza.
Southmore extended a 26-20
halftime lead into a 38-24 ad-
vantage after three periods.
Beverly Hills is now 8-4 in
district play and 14-6 overall.
Thompson
Thompson’s eighth grade
combined light and dark
teams took the consolation
game of the Bonnette Tourna-
ment in Deer Park over the
weekend.
The Lions were tripped up
in the first round by eventual
tournament champions South-
more 49-45 in overtime before
coming back to pound South
Houston 65-29 and Deep-
water 47-29.
In the first game Thomp-
son fought back from a mis-
erable first quarter to gain a
nine-point lead as late as the
third quarter. But Southmore
rallied back to tie the game in
the final 12 seconds and
forced the overtime by not
allowing the Lions a final shot
at the basket.
The Lions were only 5-18
from the free throw line and
committed 20 turnovers in the
course of the game.
“Not taking anything away
from Southmore, they played
a good game, but the free
throws and turnovers seemed
to be the main cause of our
loss,” said Thompson coach
Mike Garrison.
Southmore jumped on top
early, 14-2, before the Lions
scorched the nets in the second
and third periods. Johnny
Bolen who was named to the
All-Tournament Team, and
Wade Britt led the charge
which found the Lions out-
scoring Southmore 29-10 in
the two quarters. Bolen led
Thompson in scoring with 12
points while Britt added 11.
Hoa Ngo finished with nine
points. Arnold Todd had eight
and Larry Horton tossed in
five points for the Lions.
But Thompson rebounded
from the opening round set-
back to whip South Houston
soundly with a full court
press. South Houston was
caught in the trap and the
Lions raced out to a 23-6 first-
quarter lead. That lead was in-
creased by three, six and 10
points in the final periods as
11 Lions scratched the score-

board against South
Houston’s zone defense.
Bolen was the game’s
leading scorer with 16 points.
Lance Green and Tommy
Hulsey added eight points
apiece. Todd and Shawn Rich-
mond tossed in six points
each, and Britt had five. Hor-
ton, Ngo and Chris Perry
tallied four points apiece.
Richardson and David Arlen
added two points each.
The Lions won the consola-
tion trophy with a distinct
height advantage over Deep-
water. Thompson totaled 34
rebounds and got some easy
second shots on the offensive
end. Although the Lions were
never in trouble, Deepwater
did manage to pull within four
points several times before a
15-3 fourth-quarter. Bolen led
the team in scoring with 14
points, while Britt had 10,
Green eight, Hulsey six, Hor-
ton three, and Todd, Perry
and Arnold Vasquez added
two points apiece.
It marked the second time
Thompson has lost the
opening round of tournament
play only to come back and
win the consolation game. But
Garrison was pleased with the
team’s play.
“We are beginning to look
for and find the open man bet-
ter and we aren’t turning the
ball over quite as much,” he
said. “I was hoping to get
some work out of the players
as a combined team. But ex-
cept for the Southmore game
everyone played a zone against
us — something they can’t do
in district play.”
Thompson is 12-2 on the
year in district play and 17-4
overall.
