Dobie’s girls varsity basket-
ball team closed out the first
round of the District 23-5A
schedule with a 39-33 victory
over Pasadena at Phillips
Field House Thursday.
Pasadena’s young gift-
giving team wrapped Dobie a
neat little victory which the
Lady Longhorns had trouble
accepting. While the Eagles
were scoring 6 and 5 points in
the first and second quarters,
Dobie tossed up 39 tries at the
hoop. Even a dismal per-
centage of those shots made
would have put the game away
by halftime, but the Lady
Longhorns hit on only eight
and led 17-11 at intermission.
Laneigh Anderson sparked
the team in the third quarter
with 3-6 from the floor and a
free throw. Her seven points
in the quarter outnumbered
the beleaguered Eagles’ team
total of six and Dobie led 28-
17 entering the final stanza.
But the feisty Eagles found
the basket in the fourth quar-
ter and closed to within four
points late in the game. It was
not until Anderson dropped in
a pair of free throws in the
game’s final seconds that
Dobie secured its fifth district
win of the round.
Dobie’s game plan, was
hampered early when Linda
McDonald drew her fourth
personal foul early in the
second quarter. But Kathy
Lane and Kris Guerrettaz
teamed up to fill the void. The
two came off the bench with
good defensive play and
helped out on the boards.
The Lady Longhorns sur-
vived perhaps their worst
shooting half of the season.
Only Anderson scored more
than one field goal in the first
quarter. Laura Roberts missed

on five attempts and hit only
2- 12 for the half. Guerrettaz,
not a high scorer, tried to get
things going and ended with a
team-high five points for the
half.
The girls snapped out of the
doldrums briefly in the third
frame. Along with Anderson’s
key play, Roberts hit on her
only try of the quarter and
Precious White, who missed
on six shots in the first half,
scored from the field. Dobie
was 5-11 in that span and it
proved to be the turning point
in the game because the Lady
Longhorns made good on only
3- 11 the rest of the way.
Anderson was high-scorer
with 15 points, while Roberts
finished, with eight. Guer-
rettaz tossed in five points,
Nancy Grandfield and White
added four apiece, McDonald
had two, and Lane scored one
point.

Freshmen girls 6-2
Dobie’s freshman girls bas-
ketball team ended the first
round of district play by split-
ting the final two games of the
round.
Dobie was beaten by
Baytown Sterling 60-30 but
bounced back for a 40-9
thumping of Pasadena.
Rachel Standley led Dobie
in both contests with 12 points
in each game. Veronica
Jimenez scored eight points in
the victory and four points in
the loss. Alisa De Graff added
five points in the victory,
while Debra Fabin and Kelly
Raymond added four points
apiece. Diane Herrera tossed
in three points in the win, and
Teri Gibbs added two. Donna
Jordan scored four points in
the Baytown Sterling game.
Dobie finished the first
round with a 6-2 record.

Miles leads Dobie tankers
in PISD Invitational Meet
Jason Miles swam to a pair
of firsts and one second-place
finish Saturday as Dobie’s
boys finished fourth with 92
points in the PISD In-
vitational Swim Meet at
Southmore Pool. The girls,
who were without two-time
state swimmer, Tanya Stanley,
placed eighth.
Miles recorded firsts in the
200 and 500-yard freestyles
before coming back to swim a
leg in the 400-yard freestyle
relay team that took second.
Miles was clocked at 1:47.43
in the 200-yard freestyle and
4:59.75 in the 400. He set a
district and school record with
the 200-yard freestyle time.
The team of Miles, Chris
Milam, Paul Duport and Eric
Thompson got second in the
400-yard freestyle relay in a
time of 3:28.65.
Milam swam right behind
Miles in the 500-yard freestyle
finishing second with a time of
5:02.05.
Duport was seventh in the
100-yard butterfly and
Thompson placed ninth in the
100-yard freestyle. The 400-
yard freestyle relay team con-
sisting of Larry Burleigh, Cid
Perez, Mike Sullivan and
Brian Davis, placed 12th.
Davis was also 10th in the 200-
yard freestyle.
Thursday night, Jay Cor-
natzar took third place in the
diving competition with a
score of 280.95.
Dobie finished behind
Cypress Creek, Clear Lake
and Cy-Fair in order while
McCullough, Kingwood,
Pasadena, Dulles, Rayburn
and South Houston followed
Dobie to round out the 10
schools.
The girls placed ahead of
only Pasadena and South
Houston largely due to Stan-
ley’s absence. Stanley was
swimming in Austin’s All-
American Meet.
The 200-yard individual
medley relay team, consisting
of Nina Fellmann, Susie
Stevens, Shelly Ainsworth and
Genny Bruysschaard, who is
swimming in her last meet
because of early graduation,
placed seventh.
Fellmann was 11th ih the
100-yard freestyle, and Vicki
Sorenson took ninth in the 50-
yard freestyle. Ainsworth also
placed seventh in the 100-yard
breaststroke, while the 400-
yard freestyle relay team of
Bruysschaard, Fellmann,
Sorenson and Stevens was
seventh.

Dobie JV girls take wins
Dobie’s junior varsity girls
basketball team captured
district victories from Bay-
town Sterling and Pasadena
last week.
Tangela Punch scored 19
points in both games while
Valerie Stanton scored 16 and
13 points against Sterling and
Pasadena respectively.
Dobie beat the Rangers 51-
30 before crushing Pasadena
61-30 in Phillips Field House
Thursday.
Dobie jumped out to early
leads in both games on the
strength on strong defensive
play by Michelle Rother, who
had three steals in the opening
period of the Pasadena game,
and Monette Falzon. Rother
also hit for 10 points against
the Eagles and four against
Baytown Sterling. Falzon
scored six and nine points in
the two games.
Also contributing to the
district wins were Terri Fridge
with 10 points in two games
and Tonya Taylor with four.
Becky Straub also added two
points to the Dobie total in
downing the Eagles.

Pam Currie and Michelle
Savage combined for 23 points
and 19 rebounds to lift sput-
tering South Houston past
Galena Park 56-33 last week in
the Field House.
Currie and Savage ignited a
Trojannes team that could not
take the lid off of the basket in
the first half. Currie hit 6-9
from the floor in the final two
periods, while Savage canned
7-9.
South Houston led by only
15-14 after the first half when
both teams could manage to
make only six shots. But_

Currie and Savage, along with
consistent play from Val
Kelley, sparked a 26-6 third
quarter and the Trojannes
coasted.
A nine-point spree at the
beginning of the second half
was an indication of things to
come. Currie sunk a pair from
the field, Kelley converted a
three-point play and Kelley
added to the surge with a field
goal.
Currie later bagged two
fielders and both Savage and
Janne Jungwirth hit from the
floor while Gina Gentempo
added a free throw for a
second nine-point spree that
gave the Trojannes a 37-20
advantage.
But the varsity gave no indi-
cation that this kind of per-
formance was forthcoming. In
the first quarter, Currie and
Kelley had all seven South
Houston points while Galena
Park managed a six-spot.
Kelley came back to tally four
of eight South Houston points
in the second quarter and a
one-point lead.
Currie finished the game
with 17 points, while Savage
had 16 and Kelley 15.
Trojannes coach Jeanne
Smith has worked on getting
Kelley and Savage into the
limelight offensively, allevi-
ating some of the pressure on
Currie to do the scoring.
And the most encouraging
finding is that the two can
become serious scoring threats
against any team.
South Houston will enter
the second round with a little
more confidence all the way
around and should get off to a
good start, their 4-4 first
round mark looks to be im-
proved.
