Dobie’s boys junior varsity
basketball team used strong
defensive games to turn back
district foes Sam Rayburn and
North Shore last week.
In each game, Dobie cut off
its opponent’s offensive surges
and turned mistakes into bas-
kets. Rick Dixon and Jeff
Lane provided aggressive
defensive play in a 56-47
triumph over the Texans.
After falling behind 16-13 in
the first quarter, Dobie out-
scored the Texans 31-10 in the
middle frames with an overall
aggressive defense.
Jeff Steinig poured in 18
points to lead the offensive
charge, while Jeff Hudson
finished with 11 and Calvin
Perry added 10. Dixon ended
the game with eight points and
Chris Williams had six.
Dobie continued to play
strong on the defensive end of
the court Friday night. Once
again, Dobie had to come
from behind. The quick hands
of John Scanlin made that
task a much simpler one to ac-
complish. Scanlin helped
Dobie from a 20-16 halftime

D Girls Duel Dickinson
The 11-year-old D girls soc-
cer team was defeated by
Dickinson’s Greased Light-
ning 1-0 Saturday. Dickinson
placed first in the Bay Area
Soccer Association, and the
Spurs placed second. Both
teams advance to regional
playoffs Jan. 30-31.
The game was intense.
Goalie Erin Kennedy had to
make six saves which enabled
the Spurs to maintain a 0-0
game at the end of regulation
play. Outstanding defensive
moves by fullbacks Jan
Duport, Jennifer Pascoe and
Carrie McReynolds assured
of two 10-minute overtimes.
The offensive players are to
be commended for their con-
tributions to the game. Several
good scoring attempts were
made by forwards Donna
Bergier, Shannon Raymond,
Jennifer Jordan, Roxanne
Wheeler, Pipper White, Co-
lette Couvillon, Kim Schnorf,
and Shannon Chatagnier.
Midfield action was the
result of active, aggressive
moves by the halfbacks. Anna
Neal, Tammy Sharp, Sandra
West and Jennifer Lara re-
peatedly made stops, steals
and passes.
Following a complete team
effort by all players during the
game and overtimes, a shoot
out was required to break the
0-0 tie. Each team had five
players alternate in kicking on
goal with the opposing goalie
in position. Thus, the 1-0 win
for Dickinson.
The girls are coached by Bill
Raymond and Bob McRey-
nolds. The season’s record
stands at 10 wins and 2 losses.
Of the 10 wins the Spurs
scored 52 goals with nine
shutout games. A total of five
goals were scored against the
Spurs during the season. They
also scored nine goals in four
additional preseason and post-
season games. The opponents
scored one goal.

deficit into a 10-point lead
midway through the third
period with a couple of steals
that resulted in layups. Dobie
reeled off 12 straight points
late in the third quarter and
Scanlin’s steals put the Long-
horns up for good.
Scanlin ended with 12
points, while Joe Carr added
11 and Hudson had 10. Dixon
finished with six points, Perry
had four and both Lane and
Adam Garcia tossed in two
points apiece.
The victories upped Dobie’s
district record to 4-2 and 13-9
overall.
SoHoJV
South Houston’s junior
varsity boys basketball team
raised its district record to 4-2
last week by beating Pasadena
42-31.
The Trojans spread the
scoring around with eight
players scratching the score-
board. Byron Benard led the
way with 14 points, while Glen
Irving added 10. Steve Davis
finished with six points, David
Rusch and Richard Cardenas
had three each, and Rodney
Wilson, Mark Bush and James
McSpadden all contributed
two points in the win.
After Irving’s basket put
South Houston ahead for the
first time at the end of the first
quarter, the Trojans had to
overcome a 14-12 deficit at
halftime.
But Benard hit a turn-
around jumper with 7:15 to
play in the third quarter to
give South Houston a 16-14
edge. Cardenas later con-
verted a three-point play to
give South Houston its third
lead of the game and when
Davis scored with 2:46 to go in
the third quarter, the Trojans
were ahead for good. Wilson
and Benard then added field
goals to strengthen the lead,
and South Houston rolled to
victory.
Dobie sophs
Dobie’s sophomore boys
basketball team gained its first
district win last week when
they knocked off Sam Ray-
burn before bowing to North
Shore.
Dobie led most of the way
against the Texans with James
Etienne pouring in 18 points
for the night. Rayburn tied the
game at 22-22 with a minute
left in the half, but Dobie out-
scored their hosts 10-6 in the
third period and 12-2 in the
fourth quarter.
Mike Moore followed
Etienne in the scoring column
for Dobie with 12 points.
Kevin Carpenter, who poured
in 20 points in the North Shore
loss, added nine points in the
victory. Robert Dirck scored
six points, and Craig Tyer
added five. Bruce Watson and
Davy Flickinger tossed in two
points apiece. Etienne and
Dirck had nine rebounds to go
along with their scoring total.
But Dobie was outshot by a
visiting Mustang team 52-39
Friday night at Dobie. The
Longhorns shot 30 percent
from the floor and trailed 23-
11 at halftime. Carpenter led a
charge in the third quarter
which found Dobie pulling to
within three points. But a poor
overall percentage proved
Dobie’s downfall.
Moore added seven points
to go along with Carpenter’s
20, aqd both Tyer and Chris
Cook played well defensively
for Dobie.
The Longhorns are now 1-5
in district play and 9-12
overall.

knock off district foes
Baytown Sterling 61-43, and
Pasadena 47-38 to raise their
district mark to 4-2.

the Trojans came back strong
early last week. James Sim-
mons poured in 24 points and
Robert Kolakowski added 19
to lift the Trojans past Bay-
town Sterling.

the victory.
The hot-shooting continued
Thursday as the Trojans
squeezed past Pasadena 47-38.
In overcoming a sloppy
game, the Trojans reached
above the .500 mark with a 9-8
overall record.
Kolakowski led the way
with 15 points and Stone add-
ed 10. Mendoza and Sim-
mons had seven points each

of the contest, but the Texans
tied the game in the fourth
quarter. The freshman team
held leads of 11-9, 22-19 and
34-32 after the first three
periods of play.
But North Shore proved to
be a more powerful team for
Dobie. The Mustangs handled
Dobie 65-55 on their home
court.
Dobie trailed 27-18 at half-
time but tried to whittle the
lead down in the third quarter
to no avail.
Washburn had 16 points,
while Cummings, Andrus and
Rangel all added 10 points.
Dobie is 3-3 in district play

Trojans poured it on the
second frame. South Houston
led at halftime 23-17 and the
two teams scored evenly in the
second half.
Following Gonzales in the
scoring column was Robby
Gale with seven points. James
Salazar and Carlos DeLeon

when the team hit four points
in the final eight seconds to

district games.
But South Houston could
not overcome a 30-12 halftime
deficit against the visiting
Eagles Thursday.

CHIROPRACTIC
OUTLOOK
By Dr. Michael J. Stokes
SLIPPING AND SLIDING
Government statistics tell us how dangerous domestic ac-
cidents are. Among the worst are the bathtub injuries.
Those twisted backs and falls, and accompanying slipped
discs and misaligned vertebrae, are common to any age
group.
Every trauma to the human body is absorbed, to some
degree, by the spinal column. Now the human body is mar-
velously endowed with self-healing powers; it can often
adapt and compensate for the abuses done to it. But when
interference in the nervous system occurs (the spine),
healing can take place only when the subluxated or mis-
aligned vertebra causing the interference is adjusted back in-
to proper position. Once the chiropractor makes the adjust-
ment, the body begins to work more efficiently and natural
healing can take place.
