Family mourns loss
of pet shot and killed

Arwen, 6, trades a kiss with Bubba, a Siberian husky who was shot and killed
Tuesday afternoon by a man who said the dog, along with a German shepherd,
were chasing and attacking his goats.
Husky was important part of veteran’s life

It was an article in
Wednesday's Index that
informed a family the fate
of one of two missing
dogs.
Bubba, a Siberian
husky, was shot and
killed in just outside the
city limits by a man who
said the dog, along with a
German shepherd, were
chasing and attacking his
goats.
According to Nikki
Dorau, the husky shot by
a landowner Tuesday, was
her fiance's beloved pet.
She said Ty Thomas, a
U.S. Army veteran, was
incredibly close to the
4-year-old dog.
"When he came home
from his deployment,
you've never seen a dog
and person so happy to
see each other," Dorau
explained. "This is literal-
ly killing our family
because he was such a big
part of our family."
In addition to Thomas,
Dorau said the loss will
be very difficult for her
6-year-old daughter,
Arwen.
"When my daughter
got up [Wednesday]
morning, she was like,
'Mom, where's Bubba?
Did he come home?' I
don't know how to tell
her she won't be coming
back," she said.
The shooter told the
Index he had recently lost
several of his goats to
wild dogs or coyotes. He

Book proceeds to help fund bat sanctuary
By CHRIS AGEE
cagee@mineralwellsindex.com
Local author and Bat
World Sanctuary owner
Amanda Lollar recently
released a children's book
based on her first experi-
ence with the animal to
which she would later
dedicate her career.
Lollar said she adopted the
first of many orphaned
bats. Her mother, Gladys,
was integral in the process
and offered the name Baby
See-through for the small
creature.
Lollar said her mother
encouraged her to turn the
story into a book and she
promised to do so. Though
Gladys passed away before
"Baby See-through" was
published, Lollar said she
is glad to keep her promise
and offer the book in mem-
ory of her mother.
In the book, Lollar
shares the story of a
unique baby bat who loves
herself and embraces her
differences.
The book is available
online at batworld.org.
Lollar said 100 percent of
the proceeds from the
book's sale will help fund
Bat World's operations.
The non-profit organiza-
tion is committed to the
rescue, rehabilitation, con-
servation and sanctuary of
the local bat population.
Lollar announced plans
late last year to construct a
"bat castle" outside of the
city with the goal of relo-
cating the bat population
currently living down-
town.
