Edwards Funeral Home
COURTESY
Construction on the Watson Home in Strawn was finished in 1920.
STRAWN - A true piece of Palo
Pinto County history is for sale.
Ranger Realty and agent Jeff
Clark have listed the Watson Place
estate, located off Highway 16 on
the north end of Strawn, just before
the Palo Pinto Creek bridge.
The property has been the home
of Edwards Funeral Home since
the early 1970s, according to
Phyllis Edwards. It was the second
property purchased in Strawn for
the funeral home business. Jerry
and Pat Edwards started the busi-
ness in 1963.
She said the business is not
going away, just looking to down-
size.
"It is too big for us, we don't
need all that space," she said. "We
are probably going build a small
chapel."
The four-bedroom, 2.5-bath
home sits on 1.9 acres with a listed
price of $295,900. The home was
built in 1919 and finished in 1920.
The Watson brothers were entre-
preneurs who capitalized on the
Strawn area's coal, then oil, booms.
The locally-famous 5,432-square-
foot Georgian Colonial-style estate
is backed by Palo Pinto Creek, and
large native oak trees frame the
home.
Clark said the home's construc-
tion was state-of-the-art for its time
with massive foundation work,
including a basement, two layers of
red brick, a carriage house original-
ly built as a servants quarters and a
covered portico (passing the out-
side cistern) so the family and ser-
vants stayed out of the rain.
According to the listing: "The
home's antebellum design was
adopted from a West Virginian
plantation home. The home had
seven fireplaces of imported Italian
marble, its mantles shipped from
New York (not fighting words,
back then). The foundation is a
reinforced concrete pier and beam
design. A central heat and air unit
is located in the basement. Floor
vents and push-button electric
switches (see photos) put this home
on the leading edge of construction
technology for the time."
George Watson bought the land
on the street now called Watson
Place from Strawn founder Bethel
Strawn in 1917. Watson began
building the home in 1919 at a
price of $125,000 (in 1920 dollars).
Mr. Watson opened the Watson
Brothers Mercantile Store in down-
town Strawn with his brother, a
general store offering groceries, dry
goods, hardware, caskets and lum-
ber. The mercantile later added
funerals to their menu of local ser-
vices.
Clark can be reached at 254-433-
2561 for more further inquiry about
the property.
