A blanket of ice covers the area for the weekend

The winter storm kept law en-
forcement officers and firemen
busy this weekend.
Thursday evening saw two ac-
cidents. According to Jacksboro
Fire Chief Jeremy Jennings, the
worst was Friday at approxi-
mately 5 p.m. involving a roll
over on Highway 281 South near
the Basic yard a few miles past
the Highway 380 East cutoff.
Victor Sanchez with the Jacks-
boro Fire Department said there
were four people occupying the
vehicle and one man was ejected
through the windshield.
The other three were treated
and released on the scene, but
the man ejected was transported
to Wise Medical in Decatur and
later taken to John Peter smith
Hospital.
DPS Trooper Shannon Mooney
worked the scene of the accident,
but was unavailable to provide
details of the vehicle occupants.
Sanchez said he believed they
were a work crew who had been
working in Jacksboro and was
headed home to Fort Worth.
Two full crews of fire personnel
were on staff waiting that night,
or about 20 volunteers and staff.
Jennings said there were a cou-
ple of accidents Friday and some
stranded motorists Sunday. He
was expecting Sunday night to
be the worst since the storm hit.
“A lot of this has thawed and all
of this going to freeze and is go-
ing to cause black ice,” he said.
“People are going to speed up to
get where they’re going and hit a
patch of black ice and go off the

Council to consider rezoning for housing development
By Cherry Rushin

The housing market in Jacks-
boro may soon expand. Jacks-
boro City Council meets tonight,
Tuesday, at 5:30. According
to City Manager Mike Smith
council members will consider
rezoning an area of the city to
allow for a future housing de-
velopment.
The area considered for rezon-
ing is near the location of the site
for the new Faith Community
Hospital. Smith said the addition
would be located north of the
new hospital just off of Highway
148 and would include lots for
sale for homes of varying sizes.
Smith said the new develop-
ment is a much needed addition
for the town.
“It’s a problem for the city,”
he said. “It’s a vicious cycle. It
makes it difficult to get business-
es here because of lack of hous-
ing for employees. It probably
prevents some smaller business
from coming in here because a
lot of people shot out of town be-
cause they live out of town. So
if at the end of the day, we can
some affordable housing,
continue to improve our in-
frastructure, then it will make it
more appealing for businesses to
come here.”
Smith said there is a surprising
number of employees who work
in Jacksboro, but don’t live in the
community and a lack of housing
may be the reason.
“Fifty percent of city employ-
ees don’t live in town,” he said.
“You’ve got teachers that don’t
live here. There’s only one doc-
tor that lives here. There’s a lot
of people that work at the prison
that might live here that live out
of town. And they’re our biggest
employer.”
He added for the year, he can
