Crosby County ★
Sheriffs Report
Last Friday Storm left damage all over County
On December 14th Crosby County was hit with a windstorm that had winds in excess of 90 miles per hour in some place. In
Crosbyton a section of an ag barn is shown wrapped around the scoreboard at CHS baseball field just west of the city, which was
caused by the storm last Friday.
Crosbyton Superintendent’s
School Board Report
By Gary Harrell
The Crosbyton CISD Board
of Trustees met in regular ses-
sion on Monday, December 17th.
The Board took action to ap-
prove the consent agenda which
includes items of a routine and/
or recurring nature, such as min-
utes and financial reports,
grouped together under one ac-
tion item.
In other action, the Board
adopted a resolution approving
the CCISD Flexible Benefits Plan,
or cafeteria plan for its employ-
ees. The new plan, which went
into effect in August, is being
administered by National Ben-
efits Services.
All local school district poli-
cies are reviewed and prepared
by the Texas Association of
School Boards (TASB) Policy
Service based on policy actions
of the Board, legislative man-
dates, changes to state and fed-
eral laws, and court mlings. Peri-
odically, school districts have all
local policies reviewed by a
TASB policy service consultant
to insure that every local policy
is up-to-date and compliant. For
CCISD, that process started in the
summer of 2012. All local poli-
cies were reviewed by the con-
sultant and the legal staff at
TASB and a lengthy list of rec-
ommendations were presented to
the Board in the fall of 2012 and
approved, along with a number
of other local policy revisions
that were made by the Board this
fall. That process has been com-
pleted and the Board took to ac-
tion to approve the new policy
manual as prepared by TASB.
Also approved were changes to
one local policy which allows the
Board to designate the type of
nonrenewal hearing procedure it
wishes to use, on a case-by-case
basis, in the event a nonrenewal
hearing were to become neces-
sary. The Board now has a choice
of conducting a hearing on its
own or using an independent
hearing officer from outside the

district.
The Board also approved an
interlocal agreement with the
West Texas Food Service Coop-
erative, which is made up of
school districts throughout
seven education service center
areas. It allows a large number of
school districts to purchase spe-
cific food service items at a sub-
stantial savings through bulk
purchasing.
In other action, the Board
employed Arturo De La Garza for
the spring semester to help with
additional special education stu-
dents that have enrolled at the
elementary campus.
Each December, the Board
conducts an annual board evalu-
ation of itself. That annual board
evaluation was conducted and
the official results were compiled
and filed as required by local
policy.
The Board was given a
progress report on the Texas
Public School District Energy Ef-
ficiency Grant Application that
was filed with the State Energy
Conservation Office (SECO) in
Austin on November 15th by
Quantified Consulting, Inc. on
behalf of the school district. If
the grant application is approved
by SECO, the school district
would receive up to $100,000 to
replace ageing HVAC units on
high school classrooms. The
school district is still waiting to
hear if the application will be ap-
proved.
The Board was also in-
formed that the elementary cam-
pus has been designated as a
PreK Center of Excellence for its
participation in the Kindergarten
Readiness System. The Texas
Education Agency, in partnership
with Regional Service Center 17
evaluates the effectiveness of
prekindergarten and Head Start
programs in preparing children
for kindergarten.
In other non-action items,
school officials reported that the
District enrollment is up 4 stu-
dents from last month. The el-
ementary is up from 185 to 189,
the middle school and high
school held steady at 95 and 111.
Total District enrollment is up
from 396 to 400.
The Board went into execu-
tive session to discuss progress
on the Superintendent search.
The Board officially opened the
vacancy on November 1, and
since that time, it has received 19
applications. The Board has
started the process of reviewing
applicants and will continue that
process into January. Interviews
could start as early as mid Janu-
ary, with a target date of naming
the lone finalist about the middle
of February. The new superin-
tendent could be on the job as
early as spring break or as late as
July 1st.
The next regular board meet-
ing is scheduled for Thursday,
January 17 th.
