Texas Boaters
Warned of Phony
Organization
Texas boaters have been
warned not to be taken in by a
spurious organization selling
phony boat registration certifi-
C&t6S.
Calling itself the “U.S. Mer-
chant Marine Association,” the
organization has sent offers for
"registration” to boat owners
in several areas across the
country.
Texas Parks and Wildlife De-
partment officials remind Tex-
as boaters that they need only
register their boats with the
department in order to operate
their crafts in the state’s pub-
lic waters.
The U. S. Coast Guard said
the registration of boats is the
responsibility of state govern-
ments except in the states of
New Hampshire, Washington,
Alaska and the District of
Columbia, where it is the re-
sponsibility of the coast Guard.
Soil Temperature
Important Factor
In Mesquite Kill
Some of the latest research
findings in connection with
aerial spraying of mesquite has
shown that soil temperature is
extremely important to obtain
kill.
Mesquite kill on the test plots
never exceeded 12 percent when
the soil temperature at a 12
inch depth was 74 degrees Far-
enheit or below. When the tem-
peratures exceeded 75 degrees
the root kills ranged from 38 to
68 percent. According to Ho-
ward Barton, of the local Soil
Conservation Service office,
soil temperatures at a 12 inch
depth in the north part of Arch-
er County was 59 degrees last
week.
This was before the latest
rains and cool weather and
means that it will likely be at
least late May before the de-
sired soil temperatures are
reached.

‘‘Also, through our associa-
tion with the university in this
