REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
Wildcats Bow To
Panthers, 27-22
The final curtain dropped
Friday night on eight senior
football players as the Wild-
cats bowed out of the state
playoffs in a regional match
with the Princeton Panthers.
27-22, at Decatur. A good
turnout of fans from both
towns braved a brish north-
erly wind and temperatures
below the freezing mark to
witness the offensive battle.
Junior fullback Rodney
Williams, a top defensive
and offensive performer for
the Wildcats, suffered a
severe knee injury early in
the contest and missed the
final three quarters of ac-
tion. Williams, who had
gained over 100 yards each
in the last three games, was
off and running for another
top performance when he re-
ceived a slashing low block
and was sidelined for the re-
mainder of the contest. At
the time of the injury, the
Wildcats were out in front.
14-0. and appeared to be
heading for a rout of the
East Texans.

toss in pre-game ceremonies
and elected to take the win
and kickoff to the Panthers
in hopes for an early break—
the break never came. The
Panthers, following three
jabs at the tough Wildcat
defensive line, were forced
to punt with the locals gain-
ing possession on their own
29. On the first play from
scrimmage, tailback Danny
Alexander hit off right tack-
le. side-stepped a Panther
defensive back, and slid
down the right sideline for a
71-yard td romp. Larry Cul-
well hit the PAT for a 7-0
lead with 10:00 still remain-
ing in the first quarter.
Again the Wildcat defen-
sive squad held the Panthers
for only three yards in three
attempts and forced a punt.
The Wildcats took posses-
sion on their own 25 and
used most of the remaining
time in the first period to
march 75 yards for the
second td. The drive took 14
plays with Alexander going
in from three yards out to
climax the drive. Again Cul-
well tacked on the PAT for a
14-0 lead with 1:03 remain-
ing in the first period.
It was on the last offensive
play of the first period be-
fore the Panthers picked up
their initial first down with
their first drive past mid-
field bogging down at the
Wildcat 25. Following an ex-
change of punts, the Pan-
thers took possession at the
Wildcat 37 following a short
22-yarder into the stiff north
breeze. From the 37 it took
the Panthers eight plays to
close the gap with QB Bill
Cave going in from three
yards out on a keeper. The
PAT was good with the lead
being cut to 14-7 with 2:00
remaining in the first half.
Following intermission, the
defensive unit stopped the
Panthers and forced a punt
with the Wildcats gaining
good field position at their
own 45. They quickly drove
to the Panther 30 and a first
down, but three plays netted
only five yards and the Wild-
cats elected to try a 40-vard
field goal. Culwell had plen-
ty of distance on the attempt
but the officials said the ball
was wide to the left.
Operating from the 20. the
Panthers put together an 80-
vard drive that was climaxed
with a 25-yard td pass from
Cave to Mike Wright. Brent
Whitsell. a tough Panther
running back, rammed the
ball over for the two-point
conversion and the Panthers
were in front for the first
time with :56 remaining in
the third period.
The lead stood up only
briefly as the Wildcats came
storming back and moved 58
yards in five plays to re-
capture the lead with Oliver
banging over from the 16 for
the td. The td was set up by
a 33-yard pass from QB Dan-
ny Hopkins to Pau' Wylie.
Hopkins, on a keepe\ slid
around right end for the two-
point conversion and a 22-15
lead.
The Wildcat defensi/e unit
dug in and forced the Pan-
thers into a long yardage
situation when Cave hit
Mike Wright for a 43-yard
pass and run play that gave
the Panthers a first down on
l»
the Wildcat eight. On fourth
and one. Whitsill slammed
over for the td to cut the
Wildcat lead to 22-21 with
6:50 remaining in the game.
The Panthers elected to go
for two with the quarterback
fumbling the exchange from
the center and the Wildcats
recovering.
Disaster struck quickly fol-
lowing the Panther td as the
Wildcats lost their only fum-
ble of the game with the
alert Cats covering at the 22.
The Panthers moved to the
eight and a first down and
then the Wildcats dropped
the enemy for a three-yard
loss. Facing second and
eight, the Panthers were
again dropped for a sizable
loss, but the Wildcats were
flagged for being offside and
the ball placed at the four.
Tim Strickland then slashed
through for the go-ahead td
with 3:38 remaining in the
contest.
Oliver, on two slashing
runs, put the Wildcats back
in Panther territory at the 40
and a first down. Another
big burst by Oliver was nul-
lified with AC being hit with
a 15-yarder. The Wildcats
failed to pick up the 25 yards
for a first with the Panthers
gaining possession and
running out the remaining
time on the clock.
Wildcat seniors playing
their last game for AC in-
cluded James Ray Ash,
Larry Culwell, Steven Par-
ker, Steve Stults, Paul
Wylie, Weyman Oliver,
Craig Loftin, and Andy
Graham.
Other Wildcats turning in
service on the varsity team
included Hopkins. Alexan-
der, Williams. Pat Martin,
Mike Aulds, Barry Hutson,
Mark Green, Dick McDaniel,
and Allen Walsh. The young
players will be back next
season along with Mitch
Green, Leslie Stubbs. Dusty
and Rusty McCord, Steve
Hoegger, Scott Myers, Greg
Graham, Jerry Hemphill,
Jeff Fletcher, Gregg Bell,
Carlton Schlomach, Jackie
Mueller and Mark McCork-
le.
