Co. Agent’s
Report

LARGE WHEAT SUP-
PLIES LEAD TO SET ASIDE
PROGRAM--Due to large
wheat supplies in the U.S.,
the USDA has announced a
set-aside program to trim
production. Even with the
acreage cut back, wheat
prices will not improve much
this fall unless crop pro-
blems develop in other parts
of the world, notes a grain
marketing specialist with the
Texas Agricultural Exten-
sion Service. Also, the de-
cline of the value of the
dollar could help give im-
porters "bargain" prices for
U.S. wheat and thus in-
crease exports. The 1979
wheat program is similar to
that of last year and revolves
around a 20 percent set-
aside of planted acreage.
A group of state and
national organizations have
organized to enable a more
unified effort concerning soil
surveys in Texas.
The new group is the Texas
Soil Inventory Committee,
an interagency committee
composed of representatives
of the Texas Agricultura1
Extension Service. (TAEX).
Texas Agricultural Expert
ment Station (TAES). USDA
Soil Conservation Service
tSCS), Texas Forest Service
(TFS), Texas State Soif and
Water Conservation Board
(SWCB). and U.S. Forest
Service (USFS).
According to Dr. B.L. Har-
ry*. Extension land and
water use specialist and
committee secretary, the
group has two main func-
tums-to improve communi-
cations and to recommend
policies concerning soil sur-
vey activities in Texas
Specific areas of committee
involvement are these:
1 To improve interagency
cooperation and coordination
in furthering the Texas soil
survey program.
2. To solicit public input
regarding 'soil sarvey activi-
ties and priorities and to
serve as a focal point for
those inputs.
3. To review and evaluate
priorities for field mapping,
research and educational
programs.
4. To generate support for
soil surveyntogram.
