THE ARCHER COUNTY NEWS
j MM People, Places, Things
■gtjSEg With “Pap” Simpson
On my way (“our way", and I
refer to my little spouse and
myself) home from Mississippi
I had been thinking to myself
that I could drive from Jackson,
Miss to Big H in one day So
1 let off the idea and though it
is a recognized fact that I can
do as I please the spouse says
“no soap.” Then 1 decided that
we would turn north some 20
miles from Marshall, Tex. and
spend the night in Jefferson.
Tex. I had read that there was
a hotel where Gen. Robt. E. Lee
had spent a few days on at least
two occasions. Also that Gen
Grant had also spent a night
there once. That would be "sum-
pin," I thought if I could have
my choice to spend the night in
the same room that one or the
other had stayed in.
Well when we arrived in town
we found that their annual cel-
ebration was to begin the next
afternoon Arriving at the hotel
we found that the lady who op-
erated the hotel was ill and had
let her help off for a few days
so we were not able to get a
room there However, we did
get to go in the lobby with its
old light fixtures and furniture
She had for some reason moved
the register from the room and
we did not get to see the signa-
ture of these two great men or
of the railroad magnet Jay Gould
We were told that it is true that'
when Mr. Gould tryed to get the
city dads to grant him a right-1
of-way for a railroad thru town
and they refused, that he wrote
on the bottom of the register
“Today marks the end of Jeffer-1
son”. They further agreed that
the statement was true At that
time Jefferson was called “the j
gateway to Texas" and the town
was built on the west end of a
Bayou so water-way was their
or.ly means of transportation;
therefore, they felt no need forj
a railroad.
But soon after this incident hap- j
per.ed some drifts and debris was j
removed from the river and this,
caused the bayou to back up]
■ some 9 miles, leaving them sit-
ting high and dry, boat docksj
and all. and no transportation I
They did not have their railroad |
so the town lost muen of its
business. In fact, I was told that (
it had never recovered Directly |
across the street was Jay Gould's ]
private car that he had ridden
so many miles, sitting on some
blocks. A gift, so I was told, from
Mr Gould's son. I payed S1.00 to,
walk through it for both of us. j
After I came out and was dis-
cussing the history of the place!
with the person in charge 7 j
thought, what a grim reminder!
of a glorious past, and one big \
mistake that ended the town's]
possibility of becoming a truly j
great city'
The high school was putting j
on a play that night called “The i
trial of Diamond Bessie”. We j
did not stay for it as we had to
get somewhere for a room
Besides I had read of "Diamond j
Bessie" and the trial was not of i
her. but of one thought to have!
murdered her for her diamonds, j
But according to the account I
read, there was no conviction,
so I figured there would pro-
bably be a hung jury and no

conviction now.
Around Jefferson is as pretty
a part of Texas as I ever saw and
this old town breathes the very'
spirit of the pioneers who opened
the country and the next to the
oldest town in the state. There
are several old homes there that
are maintained as when they were
first built, marble top furniture
and all. but they were not open
at the time.
