away, Monday.
Funeral services were held for
William Kana, age 13, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Ivan Kana, of Midfield at
the St. Peter’s Catholic Church at
9 a.m. Tuesday. Burial was in the
Catholic Cemetery in Blessing.
Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Smith are
the grandparents of a baby girl
born to Mr. and IMrs. Tommy Smith
of Bay City. The little girl, weigh-
ing 6 lbs. 14 ozs., was named
Karen Lee and was born on Wed-
nesday, September 20th.
Kem Tips, chief of Humble’s
football announcing staff, began
broadcasting for the company in
1935. During the 1961 season it is
estimated that he will speak some
265,000 words on the air.
Humble's 1961 broadcast sched-
ule will require the services of
about 106 broadcast crew members
in addition to many more radio
studio technicians. Twenty-five an-
nouncers, 18 radio engineers, 12
supervisors and a minimum of 51
spotters make up the crews.

for recruit training in Marine

ed for Honor Man Award. For hav-
ing received top honor award he
was presented a Marine Corps dress
blue uniform by the publishers of
(the “Leatherneck” magazine.

Paul J, Gerhard
Relatives and friends were sad-
dened by the death of Paul J. Ger-
hard, a well-known and long-time
resident of the Deutschburg Com-
munity. Mr. Gerhard passed away
in Veterans Hospital in Houston,
Friday night, September 8, 1961.
Funeral services were held from
the Palacios Funeral Home, Friday
morning, September 15, at 10:00
a.m., with the Rev. Clinton Harris
conducting the service, and burial
was in the Deutschburg Commun-
ity Cemetery with the Veterans of
Foreign Wars in charge. Pallbear-
ers were Dick, Don, Dan and Doug-
las Kubecka, and Bobby and Larry
Dillard.
“Mr. Paul”, as he was known by
his many friends, was born in
Winchester, Wisconsin, March 9,
189*5 to Dr. and Mrs. Herman Ger-
hard. His father being a newspaper
correspondent and Lutheran Min-
ister, he received his education in
the United States and Germany. In
1911, as a young man, he came with
his parents to the Deutschburg
Community of which his father was
founder. His country needed his
services during World War I, and
he enlisted and served overseas. Af-
ter the wav, he returned to his home
in Deutschburg, and on November
7, 1919, was married to Anna Eloge.
To this union was born six daugh-
ters and one son.
Over the years “Mr. Paul” was
instrumental in many civic and pub-
lic improvements that were made
in his community and county. Good
schools, roads, and drainage were
some of his favorite projects.
Left to mourn his passing are
his wife,. Anna; six daughters,
Martha Kubecka, Palacios; Emma
Williams, Houston; A'deie Mutchler,
Fort Worth; Bertha Stewart, Pa-
lacios; Anna Sells, Cypress; and
Irene Thompson, Los Angeles, Cal-
ifornia; and one son, Paul, of
Tampa, Florida; 29 grandchildren,
two sisters, Adele iMcCarrictk, Chi-
cago, HI., and Vilma Lacka, Ger-
many, and several nephews and
nieces.—Contributed.
