Strong Chinese counter-attacks
have hurled the Japanese back
to the gates of Nancheng and
Fuchow (Linchwan) in Kiang-
Wl province, but an enemy force
of 20,000 men is closing in on
Lishui .wtieri* tnere is an impor-
tant allied air field, in neigh-
boring Chekiang province, a mil-
iary spokesman revealed today.
He said a developing Chinese
offensive in Kiangsi had halted
the western arm of a Japanese
pincers which had come within
aO miles of dominating the Nun-
chang-Hanchow railway.
A filer recai<-,uring ' Kewiki,
key rail city, Chinese forces
gloved 40 miles southwest and
reoccupied Kinki, the spokesman
said. The enemy column that
was repulsed at Kweiki now
has fallen back 12 1-2 miles to

she leaves the routine house chores
to a nursemaid while she keeps tor
herself a place in her husband's
political and business life. He was
in the legislature when she married
him and has been there continu-
ously since. She has been his “un-
of.icial" campaign manager in every
campaign but became “official"
manager of his campaign for lieu-
tenant governor after Pearl Harbor
This gleaming smile radiating
from Mrs. Vernon Lemons behind
the campaign manager's desk of
her senator-lieutenant husband who
is candidate for lieutenant gov-
ernor in the summer primaries, is
a natural happiness glow and not
just a seasonal vote-getting shine
turned on for the duration of the
campaign. This same smile helped
elect her a “Cactus" beauty during
her student days at the University
of Texas and it won for her a prize
as “National Smile Girl” in a na-
tional photographic contest. And it
is a brainy smile, too. She was also
named to Phi Beta Kappa, national
scholarship society in her student
days at the University. And she
was a student who earned as she
learned, paying all her school ex-
penses from her stenographic work
done outside school hours. All of
this speaks a well balanced philos- lieutenant governor will require no
ophy of life which truly applies to more time in Austin that that of
her. She has a fulsome sense of I senator.
