Professor Advises
Gardeners Forget
Man In Moon
MADISON, WIs. - (UP) —
Professor .lames Moore says it’s
about time the old man in the
moon was ostracized from vic-
tory gardening.
The University of Wisconsin
horticulturist reports that vic-
tory gardeners are placing too
much stock in the moon’s influ-
ence at pleating time. He says
the apparently popular belief
that successful garden growth
depend: on planting seeds dur-
ing certain phases of the moon
is pure superstition.
Moore explains that he wasn’t
aware of the widespread accept-
ance of the Lunar legend until
recently lie say 'that formerly
gardeners probably consulted
with the almanac to learn the
proper planting days. Now. he
reports, there must bo a war-
time shortage of almanacs or
el c the moon statistics have
been eliminated.
I or Moore -Is being besieged
by letters asking when the
moon will reach the right phase
for planting.
in reply, Moore advises vie
lory gardeners to forget alio t
the moon and turn their attee
tioii to fertility and condition
of the soil seed quality and at-
mospheric and temperature con-
ditions at planting t,inie.
