Rut een as Dundee sympathised
and mentally deplored his chlof'a
mi'hod of kiepir. all posstbla wit-
nesses under one roof he was
gr-uvful for the result For ho still
had n stubborn conviction that the
Hogarth case and the Cora Unrker
case would not bo solved today.
For an hour and a half now he
had liitined to the takU.? of icstl-
money Mrs. Rhodes had been call-
ed upon to lduntlfy both bodies a
shiver of ecstatic horror runnlns
through the morbid audience as
tho landlady bent first over one
stretcher nnd then the other as
Coroner Price lifted the sheet to
disclose the dead face beneath.
Witness after wltneas had been
briefly but thoroughly questioned
by Dr Pricv after he himself had
given his own testimony ns to tho
cause of death and the npproxi
mate time at which life had been
snuffed out. Dundee had long since
nii'de u romph-te transcription of
bin own note- taken from behind
tie screen In Jin. Hogarth's room
as the inmates of the Rhodes
House had been question in the
-mall hours of the morning follow-
ing the first nuitd'or. WltJt these
notes In hand supplemented by the
i coord of the Investigation made
from young Brede's notes of Wed-
nisday .morning's Inquiry by Ser
geant Turner Into Cora Barker's
death Coroner Price questioned lili
witnesses with a swiftness and pre
cision which won Dundee's admira-
tion As Lieutenant Strawnw had
-ml. "Good man Price!"
The young ditvctlve still Incog-

Di. Weeks The stoiles now
tallied renuirknhly well with th'J
storlis told originally. Not even
Henry Dowd varied hitl'incngcr tes-
timony for nt Dundee's urgent re-
quest the coroner hnd not lAcn
t iken into the confidence of the
police on tho subject of Dowu's
alias And none but Sergeant Turn-
ei and Lieutenant Strawn knew
that Hunry Dowd had purchased a
tirket In New York on June 2 for
Chicago. For tho murder of Sally
(iiaes and the relationship be-
tween the New York gltl and the
Hamilton women who had been
murdci d. were not to be touched
upon at the inquest
Dundee himself had beon one of
the fir"t to l' called before the
coronvr'H Jury for it was ho who
hnd di'covered Mrs. Hogarth's
body. The fact that he togothcr
with Detective Payne had also dis-
cover d Cora Barker's murder was
.skillfully omitted fiom Dr. Price's
questioning of thP young dvtcctlve
OUT OUR WAY Uy William
One thing Dundee had confldtd
I to Coroner Price Just before the ln-
qun.st however and his senry bore
dom lifttd when Daisy Shepncru
was call d to the witness chair.
When she had admitted flushing
deeply thnt she had raided Mrs.
Rhodos' kitchen on Saturday night
at the very time that Mia. Hogarth
was being strangled to d'onth. Dr.
Price asked suddenly
"Are you ncqunlnte.l with n man
named Arthur B. Wheeler Miss
Shepherd?"
Daisy's broad pleasant face went
pale and Iwr lips Jerked oddly as
she letorted: "Of course I am! He
was ii boarder at the Rhodes
House All of us knew him that Is
all who were boarding there before
h-j left."
"And thnt was on whnt date
Miss Shepherd?"
"I don't know!" she blazed. Then
leconslderlng. "I think it was early
In Juno about tho third or
fourth."
"Have you any icason Miss
Shepherd to belief that the long
distnnce call which came for you
shnrtiv "lifter 12 o'clock Inst Satur-
duv night was from Mr. Wheeler'"
"I don't know who was calling!"
Daisy retorted sullenly.
"The call was from Chicago" the
coroner reminded her. "You knew
Mr. Wheeler was in Chicago didn't
you?"
"I yes I did! But I can't see
what Arthur Whctler "
"Just a minute Miss Shepherd!"
Dr. Price Interrupted peremptorily
as he shuffled among the mass of
papers before him. He selected a
blue-tinted sheet of notB paper nna
an empty envelope both of which
Dundee had given him. Presenting
tl:e unflnlsheijiotc to the wltmiss
he jikedcbuitcoiisly:
'rtbo you tecognlze this Miss
Shcphenl?"
Daisy's hands trembled ns she
stared at the shtist of blue note-
paper. "I don't know where you
got this and how nnybody has the
nerve to go poking about in my
things but--sure I recognize It1
It's a letter I started to write to
Arthur Whevlcr and didn't flnlih'
"Will you kindly read to the
jury what you had written Miss
Shepherd?"
"J don't sec why I should!" Daisy
cried angrily "It has nothing to do
with the murders' Oh all right!
It says: The Rhodes House Sun-
day June 22. I have nsked you iv-
peatcdly not to bother me. I have
no intention of doing what you ask
and it will bo useless to call me or
write mo again' "
"Thank you Miss Shepherd. Now
will you plvasc tell this jury why
you wrote as you did and whnt le-
quest Mr. Wheeler had mado of
you?"
"Not a single solitary soul'"
Daisy retorted emphatically.
"Now Miss Shepherd may I ask
If you were well romantically In-
terested In Mr. Wheeler?"
"Hunh!" Daisy 3nortcd conttimp- .
tuously. "If you'd ever seen him
you wouldn't ask me thnt! And I
say does this lotter sound like I
was 'romantically Interested' r.i i
that sap?"
During the gust of laughter with
which the dvllghted audience grcoL
e Daisy's retort the big girl was
dismissed She returned to het
seat muttering Indignantly but
obviously ploaed nt the showing
she hnd made.
Mrs. Sharp who had returned to
'h? Rhodes House from the state
capital the night bcfoie leaned fpr-
waid fiom her chair directly be-
hind Daisy's and patted the girl
encouragingly on the shoulder
"Mr. Herbert S. Magnus!" Dr
Price called.
Ther-j was a buzz of excited com
ment for the newspapers hnd cai-
rled the rumor of Bert's engage-
ment on the very eve of her mur-
der to Cora Barker.

Two of the most active antl-pro-
hibitlonlsts In the House of Repre-
sentatives are women Mrs. Floi-
ence Knhn Repn. Cal. and Mrs.
Mary Norton Dcm. N. J.
This state of affairs is a never-
ending source of amazement to
politicians who were pronouncing
in their most positive tones ten
years ago thai me nineteentn
amendment if ratified would nail
the eighteenth amendment to the
constitution for ever.
"Give women the right to vote"
they said "and they will flock to
the poles to keep the country dry.
Almost every' respectable woman
Is an enemy of liquor"
Now these same men not only
find that two of the eight women
in Congress are uncompiomlsing
toes of piohlbitton but that the
other six take no active part in
the controversy over the merits of
tho dry law. It Is difficult. In
fact to classify some of them as
either wet or dry.
Mrs. Kahn is the author of n
bill to compensate the widows and
dependents of Innocent persons
whose lives have been taken by
piohibltlon agents and other of ft
clals seeking to enforce prohibl
tlon.
Mrs. Norton has become parti-
cularly prominent In the fight by
virtue of her sponsorship of a
resolution calling for n national
referendum on tho prohibition
question. Although open minded
on prohibition when the law was
passed alio says she has becomo
convinced during tho ten years of
its operation thnt lepcnl alone can
make tho United States a tcmpci-
atc nntlon.
Mrs. Ruth Bryan Owen Dem
Fla.; Mrs. Pcurl Oldflcld Dem.
Ark and Mrs. Florence Lnnglcy
Repn. Ky. all ate regarded as
drys although nono of them takes
part In piohibltlon debate. Mrs.
Ruth Pratt Repbn N. Y. is cred-
ited with wet sympathies. Ruth
Tannah McCormlck Repn. III.
and Mrs. Edith Rogers Repn.
Mass. do not talk prohibition on
or off the floor of the House.
The wet arguments of Mrs. Knhn
and Mrs. Norton nro allowed to
fgo unchallenged by their colleagues
In the "women s bloc" weiiner oi
them hesitates to mix in the prohi-
bition battle royal always being
waged by tho men of the House
however.
Differences In religion may not

Pope Pius XI for dispensation to

of the latter faith.
