out the city to carry out the an-
cient custom of announcing the
(lay and awaking citizens for the
Early Easter Service.
Incidentally, it was tne Mora-
vians that brought the first trom-
bones to America. In February
1753 a trumpet was made from the
hollow limb at Bethabara. They
used trombone choirs to announce
all public and private occasions
and community affairs. Other fav-
orite instruments include the
French horns, violins, flutes, trum-
pets, bassoons, clarinets, and a
Gorman instrument called the Zink.
This was a medieval trumpet with
a mouth piece of ox horn and six
finger holes. In 1805, at least 100
years after the zink became ex
tinct elsewhere, the Moravians ir.
Salem ordered a pair especially
made, they are now in the famous
Wachovia Museums in Winston-
Salem. Other instruments used in
these famous bands were the or-
gan, piano, harpischord, the cla-
cichord and the harp. The viola da
gamba, forerunner of the cello, is
the only such instrument in the
United States today that is known
to have been played in America
during the 18th century.
