■ hodilv harm. A* the subsequent
. trial, n jury of four women and
I eight men returned .• verdict of
guilty after a tried that extended
through four days. Circuit Court
Judge F. II Schlichtlng sentenced
Vinson on Octolsvr 29th to an in-
determinate terra of one to two
years in the Wisconsin Stutn Pri-
son. Vinson began serving his sen
fence a few days later.
During the trial it developed
that Van Ouwerkerk was so bad
ly injured that he was hospitalized
for twenty-two days after the at-
tack. Vinson admitted striking
Van Ouwerkerk and one of Vin-
son's companions testified that he
pleaded with Vinson to eease the
attai k. fearing that the v ictim
would be killed.
During the pre-sentence nrgu-
mort and pica for leniency both
attorneys for the defense cop
j mended Judge SchlicMing on ihe
I fair manner in which the trial I
I was conducted. I quote Attorney 1
William Quick: “And may I say!
this, that I have at no time had
any notion olher 1h n il"'t the ]
Court was beating me fairly and
giving me everything that the de-
fendant was entitled to.”
Attorney Rabinovitz said that
Judge Kchlichting “deliberately
went out of his way to protect
every single righ'."
All of the evidence points to
Vinson's having been given a fair
Trial, that he was guilty as charg-
ed and that Judge Sehlichting was
just in imposing sentence. If any
criticism can be levelled at Judge
Schiiehtirig, it is that la; was to.
lenient in irr.ix.sing a sentence of
from only one to two years.
Imagine then, the audacity of 1

service requested n». ihe regular meeting oi the Gorge Peat
Ciiy Council on December 13, 19:4, this is to let you know that
your rquest has been declined. Among the reasons for declining
your .request are the following:
X. when y. :vr earlier request* for rate increases were apnroved by
the George West City Council, your o V ials made the promise
that it wn-Jld be many years before another increase in lates
would 0? requested Your officials also made die promise that the
l.rig distance telephone service for Ihe City of George West would
be greatly improved. You have kept neither of these promises.
2. Figures contained in your brochure requesting new rates for
George West local telephone service dated November 1954, appear
to be your figures. It seems to us that any figures submitted by
you for rate increase should be prepared by independent Certified
Public Accountants. It wouid seem that the certified financial state-
ment should have been prepared for all operations out of the
Three Ilivers office with a breakdown of expenses as chargd to
Hirer fevers operations and those charged to George West opora-
Gc-sif!. Also it jeems that the Toll operations between Three Rivets
and George West should definitely be considered in computing re-
venue' from George West operations. Also we think that greater
detail sitouki be included showing on what basis overhead items
are charged into the George West operations.
J. You stat.d that the proposed rales by you are in line with
nrf#»*«bftrgedl to .4her cities We believe that you include a list
of cities in this area similar to the size of George West and show
who* ®ieh current telephone charges are. We doubt that other
cities in this area the size of George West arc being charged
for one-part,v business phone or $8.00 for two-party business
fMUs, etc., as listed in your proposed rates.
IP addition to the above listed reasons for declining your request,
we have discussed ether reasons. We are indisposed to consider
any request for new cates tor George West phone service until
your company has made good on its promises to us.
