knows they have ruled wisely and
well gaining new admirers with

NEW YORK. July 26 (U R Al-
most on the eve of tho Paris open-
ings New York retill -va gave a
presentation of fall fashion before
a great trade group many of whom
will sail immediately for Paris.
Tho general Impression was of
very' lfnborato and expensive look-
ing clothes-long for evening and
only an Inch longer for day wear
than has been worn this summer.
One wonders whether as general an
acceptance of black velvet will re-
ally b0 In order as this promenade
might lead one to expect. Trail-
ing or all but trailing black vel-
vet dresses with long draped or
ruffled wraps collarded in whit
were impressive by point of num-
berIndeed theie was far more
black than is ujual at any fashion
show. Hems swell to formidable
proportions and merely clear the
floor for evening while bodices are
fitted ana have either lapels bol-
eros or somo sort of interesting
back treatments. Embroideries us-
ually In crystal were anothei fea-
ture of several elaborate evening
dresses fashioned of shimmering
satins in somo Instances printed
with large red roses printed metal
cloth was also exploited though
velvets aslly carried the night.
While several colors were ropie-
sented all shades of green wer
highlighted pale greens for eve-
ning several of which were on a
bluish caste and green In one tone
or anothsr frequently repeated.
.Reds were naturally repeated
many times in wool and a warm
rust shared honors with it
In the fur coat group preference
was given gray four coats sevetal
nf which were of galyak and others
of doth with inserts of gray lamb
Collars are standing and coat line-
somewhat fitted sometimes being
worn with a narrow belt. In every
case close fitting fur hats and tiny
barrel muffs were featured. Black
gloves were tho invariable choice
with gray street costumes.
