Dear Sir:
The only way to get the best
of an argument is to AVOID
it, but there are too many
points that need to be
clarified in response to
Kathleen E. West “Letter to
The Editor" published Dec-
ember 21, 1978.
I can’t understand how
anyone could have a mind so
small to think that "Class
Room Knowledge” is the
answer to success in life.
Yes, it is important, but there
are many other factors
needed to make a healthy
mind.
Students are offered a wide
variety of Extra-Curricular
activities. True, football is
not for everyone, but that’s
why such wide variety is
offered and participation in
some type of Extra-Curric-
ular activity is ever so
important for development of
character, discipline and
leadership.
Every student can not be
Valedictorian or Saluata-
torian. Extra-Curricular act-
ivity opens doors every year
for students to receive
scholarships to further their
education that would not be
available otherwise.
Apparently, Ms. West did
not attend the "Sport Event"
(football game) Wylie vs.
Allen where one of our
talented athletes made a fine
welcome speech before
thousand of fans. The
opportunity to experience
and perform such as this is
not available in the class-
room. This was true
leadership....true power.
I disagree 100% with your
thoughts on our 1977 State
Championship sign. To my
knowledge no one but you
believes that having a name
in sports is greater than
having a name on the Honor
Roll (I’m sorrv vou have
misinformed your child). In
fact. I’ve noticed several of
our athletes name listed on
the Honor Roll and further-
more these athletes have to
maintain a certain grade
point to participate at all.
Yes, in Wide Awake Wylie
we have Spirit! We also have
a great pride in our
community, our schools,
teachers and our Sign and if
you contributed anything at
all, 1 will be happy to
compensate you fully.
Why should your child lose a
day at school? That is no
excuse for not studing. Are
you saying that studing and
learning stops when not in a
class room situation super-
vised by a teacher? What
happened to parents? What
are homes for?
1 believe the true purpose of
Ms. West letter was never
mentioned at all. Also, I
believe that some of our best
leaders and citizens of
tomorrow are the students
that are involved, participa-
ting, experiencing and shar-
ing in some type of
Extra-Curricular activity.
There are many to choose
from and that included
"Football".
If you don’t believe this to be
true, call some of the major
companies and see if they
don’t ask the specific
question as to what type of
activity one has been
involved in other than class

Dear Sir:
Yes indeed we have our
children so little time to
teach, let us make sure we
continue to include sports-
manship, discipline, dedica-
tion, personal commitment,
team effort, community
support and game planning.
This is not to imply that
football is King (no pun
intended) but applys to all
facets of our scholastic
program. I am proud of our
school system and it’s

This week makes it exactly
two years that I've been
Director of the Wvlie Public
Library. When I came here in
January of 1977, the Library
had 6,000 books in 22
bookcases; the catalog took
up 15 drawers; and there
were 1,325 borrowers. Cir-
culation was about 3,500
books in Fiscal 1976. Today,
we have 11.000 books in 32
bookcases; a catalog of 39
drawers; 2,150 borrowers;
and a circulation, in Fiscal
1978, of over 11,000 books -
two books per citizen of
Wylie! Now, I cannot claim
the lion’s share of the credit
for all this growth: You did it,
you wide-awake readers of
Wylie! Your taxes and
donations paid for those
5,000 books; you signed up as
borrowers, and borrowed our
up-to-date books and re-
cords; you suggested good
titles for purchase; and you
good people encouraged me
in nty day-to-day labors, by
showing your appreciation
for the modern service. As I
said two year ago, "I look
forward to being here a long
time!" Front the Segal family
(all 3Vi of us), a prosperous
New Year - full of exciting
and profitable reading!
