Court of Civil Appeals for five
years, has announced his
candidacy for Chief Justice of
that court.
In making the announcement.
Judge Guittard said. "The
single most important issue in
this campaign is qualifications.
The voters must decide if my
record of five years as Associate
justice of this court, my nine
years service as Judge of the
14th District Court of Dallas
Coonty. and my reputation and
experience as a lawyer qualify
me to hold the office of Chief
Justice.” Prior to his 15 years

The Wylie business men and
w omen seem to be experiencing
an upswing in sales and
services rendered at present.
Clyde Parker, owner of Wylie
Hardware and Furniture, is in
particularly good spirits this
week. His furniture sales are up
with present stock diminishing
rapidly and new shipments
arriving daily. This surely has
to do with his current
advertising campaign.
Johnny Snow and his wife
Carol, owners and operators of
Hobbycraft in Wylie, are
featuring many beads and
accessories including tour-
quoise (genuine), silver, african
trading beads, ivory and many
more stringables to go along
with the current fad in mod
jewelry. Johnny told this writer
some interresting facts about
the African trading beads which
were actually used by natives in
leu of currency. "Some of these
beads." says johnny, "are very
old and much used." Also they
are reported to be quite
genuine.
Bill Chapman, at Chapman's
Restaurant, is having a time
with his Friday night fish fry.
Bill has featured Catfish; all
you can cat; as his Family Nile
Special twice now and is doing
it again this week. He says it's
announced his intention to
retire. Judge Guittard has filed
in the Democratic Primary to be
held Saturday. May 1.
The 5th Court of Civil Appeals
reviews judgements of district
and county courts of Collin,
Dallas, Grayson, Hunt, Kauf-
man, Rockwall and Van Zandt
Counties.
Judge Guittard was honored by
the State Bar of Texas in 1974
when he received its Presi-
dent's award “in appreciation
of outstanding service to the
legal profession.” He is
presently a member of the
Committee on Administration
of Justice and the Pattern Jury
Charge Committee of the State
Bar. He serves on the Advisory
Committee. Texas Rules of
Civil Procedure by appointment
of the Supreme Court of Texas.
He has served as a member of
the Board of Directors of the
American Judicature Society
1972 to 1975.
Judge Guittard is known for his
service to the United Methodist
Church. As a member of the
Highland Park United Metho-
dist Church in Dallas, he has
taught Church School con-
tinuously since 1947. He has
served as Chairman of the
Official Board of the Church
and was elected as delegate to
the General Confernece of the
United Methodist Church in
Portland, Oregon in 1976.
Born and raised in Waco,
Texas, Judge Guittard, age 58,
graduated from Baylor Univer-
sity with A.B. and LL.B
degrees, both "cum laude” in
1940. He resides in Dallas with
his wife, Mary Lou. They have
three children, Charles and
John, both attorneys, and
Mary, a school librarian in

Photocopying
To Be In Post Offices
Congressman Jim Collins, in a
meeting of the House Postal
Service Subcommittee, today
moved that the Postal Service
put photocopying machines
back into the nation's post
offices. Congressman Collins is
one of the two Republicans
sitting on the Subcommittee.
His motion was adopted by
unanimous consent.
The Subcommittee had voted to
phase out the use of
photocopying service in post
offices as unfair competition
with small local businesses.
"However," said Congressman
Collins, "The public response
to the issue has been so
overwhelming that we recon-
sidered the issue. Apparently
the removal of the copying
services in post offices would
really place a hardship on the
community. In particular, we
received a tremendous amount
of mail from Senior Citizens
w ho explained how the removal
of the copiers would handicap
them in the paperwork involved
in pensions, Medicare and
Social Security. Furthermore, it
appears that the original fear of
unfair competition with small
business was unfounded.
"This new decision to return
photocopying services to the
post offices is most important to
Texas. Xerox, which handles
about two-thirds of the
photocopying business in the
United States, is a major Texas
industry. It would have been
seriously hurt by the curtail-
ment of its post office
operations. Texas is a big user
of the service, as twice as many
Xerox machines are operating
in our post offices as in any
State in the country. The
Southern Regional Office of
Xerox is located in Dallas.
"There is no reason,"
concluded Congressman Col-
lins. "That the use of

Air An Important
Natural Resource
The air we breathe is our most
important natural resource,
according to Johnny Clark with
the Soil Conservation Service. If
you don't believe this, try going
without air for just five
minutes. Man can survive
without food for about five days
and without water for 3 days.
Approximately 125 million tons
of gaseous air pollutants are
omitted into the atmosphere in
the United States every year.
About 60 percent of this total is
produced by various forms of
transportation, while industry
contributes approximately 18
percent, the generation of
electricity 14 percent, space
heating of home, apartments,
and businesses 5 percent, and
refuse disposal about 3 percent.
in addition, some 35 million
tons of particular matter, much
of which soon settles out as a
dust fall coat for foliage of
trees, is given off into the air by
various other sources. This
greatly reduces the ability of
trees to carry on photosynthe-
sis. the taking in of carbon
dioxide and the giving off of
oxygen.
Trees help to cleanse our
environment. The leaves ab-
sorb and purify many millions
of tons of air pollutants. The
release of oxygen from trees is
believed to lower the carbon
dioxide levels in cities,
according to Clark.
A green canopy can also
significantly reduce the amount
of particles when compared to
treeless areas. It has been
shown, for example, that an
acre of beech trees removed
27.6 tons of dust in a year
compared to 12.9 tons for
spruce trees, according to
Johnny Clark.
