Due To Be
Back For
Playoffs
******
Best wishes for an enjoyable Labor Day
weekend. We always look forward to it as
generally it signals to us that the Fall season
is, at least, not too far away. So, enjoy, then
get ready to buckle down for weeks and weeks
of football and the traditional harvest season.
It’s the most enjoyable time of the year tor us.

The City's recently passed weed ordinance,
which requires that grass and weeds be kept
cut on vacant properties, is a good one.
However, it is one which must be enforced
with more than a bit of common sense and we
believe the City intends to do just that. We
won’t name the city for various reasons, but
we had occasion a couple weeks ago to drive
around a neighboring town and we were
appalled at the unsightly buildings, the vacant
lots completely grown up, and more visible
junk than could be hauled away in a month.
We determined to come back home and do a
complete inspection of our own town. We did
and while we rated quite well in comparison,
there are areas which need constant attention,
make no mistake about it. Luckily, most of our
owners are in agreement with provisions ot
the new ordinance here. Main problem is the
unavailability of men and machines to keep
the weeds and grass cut. We’re probably
involved, directly and indirectly, with about as
many vacant pieces of property as most, and
at times it is most difficult to secure
manpower to keep them decent. If anyone has
a solution, please call us. We're in complete
accord with the good intentions. We just ask
that officials be considerate of the problems
i; voiced. Too, we’re convinced that an
overwhelming majority of our citizens want

Along about this time of the
year so-called pros or experts
select the top ten in the state
in football circles. We don't
know how they arrive at their
choices; in fact, we really
don't care! They have been
proven wrong about as many
times as have economists
predicting the state of the
economy.
Case in point! In both 1977
and 1978 the experts never
once mentioned Wylie as
being top ten caliber in
pre-season selections. In
fact, they really never made
it during the regular season.
Bl'T, what happened is
history. The Pirates captured
the 1977 state championship
and were finalists in 1978.
So. experts were dum-
founded! They couldn't quite
find an expianation either
year. This year, once again,
it's pretty much the same old
story. Oh. maybe in one
remote instance the Pirates
are mentioned in the top ten;
in others, nary a word!
That’s okay! We rather like it
that way. Makes us play
better! So this article is not to
bemoan our being slighted.
We intend to dwell on the
pretty well recognized fact
that many of the Class 2-AA
giants are going to be around
come 1979 playoff time. And
most of them are well known
to local football fans.
One name that keeps
cropping up in early
pre-season talk is Kenedy. If
they make it (and if the
Pirates make it) that could
mean a new face entirely. But
the others make it sound like
a broken record; Bowie will
be there, more than likely,
provided Bridgeport (in the
same league) doesn't do what
it's supposed to do with one
of the finest quarterbacks in
the state.
Don't count those pesky lads
from Childress out of the
race. We understand they're
expected to have their finest
x ■ • And the past two years
thev were certainly chain
pionship quality as every
single Pirate fan can attest.
(Box. what a game that night
in Vernon!).

We have first hand informa-
tion that Bellville fully
intends to meet Wylie this
year in Waco for the 2-AA
playoffs seeking revenge for
that 1977 upset. They have
one of the fastest backs in
captivity, faster than last
vear's Dickerson from Sealy,
a team which edged Bellville
in 1978 for the district title.
And along the playoff routes
(which can get hectic) it's
safe to predict we’ll be seeing
West and Pittsburg looming
as strong contenders. West
was eliminated last year by
Sealy and Pittsburg is a team
with practically all starters
from last year back. (And we
have it on good authority they
prefer to play on a warm
night).
What about those 1978 state
finalists? Expect a few
ripples! If they can hurdle
Kaufman (always a tough one
for Wylie); take care of the
ever-improving Frisco bunch;
and eliminate Allen in their
quest for still another 12-AA
title, the Pirates may well be
among the state giants in the
running.
These are just some of the
teams who will be alive come
the latter part of November
and early December. How-
ever, we must point out that
road is rocky and treacherous
and chances are good that
some may be detoured by a
team we've never thought
about. After all. how many of
the pros or experts back in
1977 ever thought Wylie
wxiuld win state?
Tune in weekly to see how
things progress!

The City of Wylie received a
total of $3,663.92 in sales tax
rebates from the State
Comptroller's office for the
month of July which was a 26
percent increase over the
same month of last year.
1979 payments to date to the
city have been $45,860.33, a
twenty-five percent gain over
the 1978 payments for the
same date which came to
$36,697.83.
The sizeable gain over the
past twelve months reflects
the excellent business condi-
tions of the area and
indicates the local economy is
very much alive and doing
well.
With the starting of school, it
seems everything gets back
in full swing. Band students
are out marching all over the
High School parking lot, boys
are in the huddle for that
great All-American sport of
football, and parents are
running all over the Metro-
plex in order to purchase the
latest school fashion or to
enroll their children in
various recreation or enrich-
ment classes.
Here in Wylie is no
exception. Along with all the
other activities being offered.
Community Education will
again be offering various
courses in the evenings and
on Saturdays.
In the past the program has
been successful in the
enrichment, vocational, and .
recreational courses offered
to both adults and youth,
This year, many of the same
courses in addition to some
very new interesting courses
will be offered. To improve
job skills, both typing and
shorthand will be offered.
Tennis is a big sport; both
tennis lessons and two
tournaments will be on the
agenda in September and
October. Children have the
opportunity of taking fine
dance and tumbling classes
on Saturday mornings right
here in our community. Even
the ladies can get away for an
hour a week and get in shape
with an exercise class.
A schedule listing the
offerings will be mailed this |
week to each postal patron in ’
Wylie. Registration for
classes w jl( by the week of
September 4-8. 'Should you
fail to receive a schedule,
please call Sandy Williams at
442-3700 and a schedule will

the citizens of Wylie and

advantage of what is offered
in our own community.
