Take care of trees
advises county agent
There's a lonely tree in
your landscape , one wish-
ing you’d pay it a visit
sometime soon. With record
high temperatures soon to
come, it is a distinct
possibility that trees are in
greater need of our help
than ever before, according
to James R Risinger.
county Extension agent.
Water is the crucial tool
10 mid-summer tree-grow-
ing success Larger trees
lose hundreds of gallons
each day. They count on
you to replace the loss.
•Slow” is the password to
tree watering. Take the
sprinkler off your hose, let
11 irickle slowly for hours.
Move it around under the
iree canopy. If your’re
using a root-feeding rod be
careful not to insert it too
far. Six to eight inches
would be adequate. The
majority of every tree’s
roots are right near the
surface
Newly-transplanted trees
are a bit different. Soaking
waterings may mean wa-
terlogging which may mean
rnols rotting. Water mo-
deralely and water a little
more often. If you've moved
large Irees (over 6- to
8-feet). it may be you'll
need lo prune growth back
in the heal.
Damaged root systems
that could keep up with
demands in April and May
suddenly just can t cope
Thinning lops lessens the
load.
Fertilizing Irees is good
business. Right now. if
you're keeping up with your
lawn's fertilization require
ments your irees will likely
do fine, since most Irees
have gone semi-dormant in
llie heal
spindly ones. Some current
problems:
• Webworms in pecans,
mulberries with sevin, ma-
lathion or diazinon with a
spreader-sticker surfactant
will penetrate the webs and
kill the beasts. Worms are
within the webs during the
daytime.
• The mimosa webworm
rolls leaves together, ruin-
ing appearance of trees,
Same control as above.
• Elm leaf beetle chews
holes all through Chinese.
American elms and wea
kens Irees severely Re-
peated sevin sprays are
effective.
• Anthraeonose scorches
sycamore limbs and causes
die-back Spray with fixed
copper spray next spring at
bud break No chemical
conirol at this season
c Fire blight of loquats
and pears causes fast dying
of twigs, even limbs. Prune
affected growth now. dis-
infecting tools with 2(i
percent chlorine bleach
solution between cuts
Spray with streptomycin,
but only when plants are in
full bloom
• Borers in ash. peach,
many others. Spray trunk
with dieldrin monthly for
the best prevention. Com-
mercial borer sprays are
available for control.
Later summer applica-
tions of 10-10-5. 12-fi-6. 10-5-5
or similar fertilizer will
probably be your next
major treatment.
For newly-planted trees
apply a high phosphorus
root stimulating fertilizer to
hasten recovery As in the
ease of watering, surface
applications are probably
best since most roots are
quite shallow.
Play It Safa
In Water
Water play is fun and
educational for children -
but only when they learn to
• play it ta/e." Mrs Mellon
B Cat let t, County Exten-
sion Agent, cautioned this
week
Adults must closely super-
vise water play activities
Water that is two-three
inches deep is just as
dangerous to very young
children ap water two-three
feet deep
When children congregate
in the backyard to swim in
washtubs. play with the
water hose or swim in the
pool, be conscious of water
safety, she advised
Wading pools or larger
pools should be fenced
Insist that flotation belts of
life jackets be used by all
children If a neighbor's
child fusses about safety
precuations, insist that he
get out of the water - tell
him it's a rule in the pool
Families with larger
swimming pools need to
remember to check under-
water lights Improper in-
stallation of lights can shock
swimmers Rules about
running on concrete with
wet feet should be enforced
Cleanliness in the home pool
should be as important as in
(he public pool.
If a child is gradually
introduced to water play, he
is less likely to fear water
Being forced may cause fear
or withdrawal «h* aaid
