Investigation Of
Sedative Drug In
School Is Ordered
FORT WORTH, * m Z-UP -
A chei ,:siry elm experiment
in which several students tasted a
sedative frequently used as knock-
out drops — was being investigated
Tuesday ljy public school officials
after one teen-ager fell asleep and
remained drousy over the week-
end.
School officials said the incident
occurred last Friday at the I, M.
Terrell (Negro) high school. The
student — a senior — was identi-
fied as Shirley Woodard, 16, daugh-
ter of Lillie Mac Woodard.
The girl attended school Monda
and Tuesday for final exams, and
appeared to be all right Tuesday,
her mother said.
The drug — chloral hydrate —
was offered to any student in each
of two chemistry classes by their
teacher, P. C. Logan, a chemistry
teacher for 20 years. Logan said he
offered it to any student who want-
ed to taste the drug.
The Woodard girl fell sound
asleep shortly after noon, soon alt-
er the experimmi. She was
checked by the school nurse and
taken home asleep at 4 P m. Fri-
day.
Mrs. Woodard said she aroused
| her daughter and kept her awake
I with coffee and cold baths aft"r
I she had called a physician. By Sun-
day. the mother said, tin- girl
I would fall asleep "if we riWrfl keep
1 her moving..."
Six students tasted the drug,
mixed in a soft drink, Ijigan said
I The Woodard girl and another
student, Henry Griflin. fell asleep,
he said. The others apparently felt
no effects. •
I.opan said he also took some of
the drug and felt “a tittle drousy."
lie said he believed the Woodard
gill took about half the 12 grams
of th drug off* red to three stu-
dents Logan said it was not a full
dose, although a Fort Worth doc-
tor said it appeared to be about
thrpe times the normal dose.

Southerner Puls
Confederate Flag
On Red Stronghold
CENTRAL FRONT, Korea. June
3 —UP— A fearless southerner
(planted the Confederate flag on a
Communist-held hill Wednesday
while his damyankee buddies
fought off the Reds with rifles,
macnineguns and flame throwers.
Cpl. Donald (Lucky) Paccto of
Crossett, Ark , unfurled the Rebel
flag in the faces of the Commu-
nists during an early morning lull
in the fighting.
Then he and his buddies dodged
burp guns and grenades in rushing
to the top of the hill in one of the
« most dramatic actions since the
* Marines planted Old Glory on
Mount Surlbachi during World War
II.
The attack began as a sergeant
pitched a grenade at a Communist
machinegnn nest.
From then on ail was not quiet
on the c°nlral front.
The Red burp guns roared and
Allied artillery hit the back side
of the hill.
Crawling on their elbows and
^ knees, the Americans were pinned
^ down momentarily hy grenades
bursting around them.
Then Cfl. Frank E Moore of
Barabee, Wis., spewed liquid
flames into doorways of a Red
bunker where the Chinese were
hiding with their grenades.
A grenade tossed into another
hunker exploded a hidden ammu-
nition dump.
While Moore was cremating
Communists with his flame throw-
er, Paccio moved closer to the hi 11-
M top with his Confederate flag.
Before reaching the top, one ot
Paccio’s Yankee buddies was
felled h.v burp gun bullets. A med-
ic ran through enemy fire to treat
the injured man.
Then Sgt. Anthony Ort-ga ol
Mexico City, in a neighborly ges-
ture from south of the border,
pumped six magazines of rifle bul-
lets into a trench as the Reds tried
to escape.
Paccio readied the top and
(( rammed the Rebel flag into the
ground.
Mission accomplished, the band
headed hark across no man’s land
with their wounded. Sfc. Michael
Morganella of Boston threw him-
self across a barbed wire barrier
so his buddies could hop over to
safety quickly
NEW YORK. June 3—UP—A

ment questionnaire.
One of the questions was “Have
you ever been arrested? If so.
why?" He answered "Yes, for
speeding.”
"Disposition?” “Pleasant."

Strong Man Of
Italy Comes To
Vote Test Sunday
By PHIL NEWSOM
United Press Foreign Analyst
Ever since Italy's return to the
family of nations alter World War
II, her destiny has been guided by
Premier Alcidc Do Gasperi.
But on this coming Sunday—in
Italy's general elections—the man
who Icrl Italy into the Atlantic
Pact, faces his strongest test.
Even the most optimistic will not
give him much more than a 50-50
chance of winning. In Italy, as
elsewhere, the fight against com-
munism is a primary issue. But.
if Dc Gaspcri’s Christian demo-
crats and the Allied rightwing so-
cialists. Republicans and liberals
are defeated this time, it won't be
by the Communists.
Internal Differences
Rather, it will be on purely in-
ternal differences which have re
j suited in splinter groups and a di-
vision of anti-Communist forces so
1 irmly allied in the 1948 elections,
in 1948, the Christian democrats
; alone got 48.5 per cent of the vote
and, with their three present allies,
amassed 62 per cent.
The result has been for the last
live years a thoroughly De Gasperi
dominated government.
This year Italy votes under a new
election law. It gives 380 of the 590
scats in the chamber of deputies
automatically to the party nr coal-
ition winning 50.01 per cent of the
popular vole.
Recently opinions were asked of
editors of 10 major non-party news-
papers in Italy. Sicily and Sardinia
on this year's outcome.
Three believed Dc Gasperi's
coalition would fall short of the
needed majority by one or 2 per
cent.
May Squeak Through
The others thought he would
squeak through. They believed,
however, that the issue would he
decided h.v only one to 3 per cent
of the vote.
If Dp Gasperi’s coalition wins,
the new law giving the winner 64
per cent of the chamber seats will
assure Italy of a stable govern-
ment.
F.ut if the outcome brings about
a shakier coalition of center-mod-
erate lefl nr center-moderate right,
then Italy eould liccome another
France with periodic cabinet crisis.

Man Trapped By
Cave-in Of Well
TYLER, Tex., June 3 —UP—A
water well which S. F. Luzzi was
lining with concrete caved in as
; the 50-year-old drilling contractor
! worked 67 feet underground, bury-
ing him up to his armpits for 30
I minutes Tuesday.
Leroy Taylor, a helper, lowered
a bucket to I.uz.zi and the con-
tractor being freeing himself a
bucketful of sand at a time. The
fire department was summoned,
arrived and lowered a ladder.
"I felt about lik'* a person would
if they were coiled around by a
boa constrictor," Luzzi said
Wednesday. "Every time 1 took a
breath the sand pressed in tighter,
making the next breath more
difficult."
SAN FRANCISCO, June 3-UP-

of Sox, his part-Pcrsian lady-love,
Mrs. Jenkins picked Ping Pong up
and threw him out.
The frustrated Ping Pong hit
Mrs. Jenkins. Now Mrs. Jenkins,
