Five Generations Meet
Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Karr
of Seymour announce the
engagement of their dau.
ghter, Kerri DeNay to Terry
Wayne Petit, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Wayne Petit. A March
6th wedding is planned at
the First Baptist Church of
Seymour. The bride-elect is
a 1981 graduate of Seymour
High School and is currently
employed by the School Tax
Office. Petit, a 1980
graduate of Seymour High
School is employed by the
Cowan & Son Ranch.'
The wintertime is a time
for snow and ice-related ac-
tivities for many, but even
mildly cold weather can trig-
ger in the elderly a poten-
tially fatal drop in deep body
temperature, known as
hypothermia (hi-po-ther-
mee-uh.
Because accidental hypo-
thermia can happen indoors
in mild temperatures of
60-65 degrees fahrenheit, it
may be necessary to keep
temperatures in places
where the elderly live above
65 degrees.
"Those at greatest risk
are the relatively small
group of the elderly who
cannot shiver, and thus can-
not produce body heat when
they need it." said Dr. Clift
Price, Associate Comm-
issioner for Personal Health
Services.
Among the elderly, the
most likely to develop ac-
cidental hypothermia are
the chronically ill. the very
old, the poor who cannot af-
ford enough heat, and those
who don’t take normal pre-
cautions to keep warm.
Accidenal hypothermia,
however, can occur in any-
one who is exposer) to severe
cold without enough protec-
tion.
"There are some symp-
toms to be alert for in the
older person," Dr. Price
said. "Hypothermia should
be suspected if a person
feels cohi to the touch but is
not shivoring. and if the
heartbeat is slow and ir-
regular or the blood
pressure is low. The victim
may also appear confused,
drowsy or unconscious."
How can hypothermia be
detected? Take the in-
dividual’s temperature. If it
is below 95 degrees or does
not register on an oral ther-
mometer, repeat using a rec-
tal thermometer for a more
accurate reading, he said. If
the temperature still does
not register or is below 95
degrees, get emergency
help. The only sure way to
detect hypothermia is to use
a special low-reading ther-
mometer available in most
hospitals.
"If you must wait for
emergency help to arrive,
wrap the victim in warm
blankets, and if the victim is
conscious, give the in-
dividual small quantities of
warm food and drink," Dr.
Price said. "Rubbing the
person's limbs can worsen
the condition, and never give
the victim anything
alcoholic to drink."
The elderly probably ac-
count for nearly half of all
victims of acr.idtMital
hypothermia. They succumb
more readily because the
physical changes which
often accompany aging
reduce the body’s ability to
regulate its interna'
temperature and to sense
the cold. Dr. Richard W
Besdine of the Harvard
Medical School estimates
that 25.000 people over the
age of 65 die every year from
hvnothermia.

Th# Church is God's appointed agamy in. this world
far sprioding the knowledge of His love for man and
of His demand for mon to respond to that lovo by
loving his neighbor. Without this grounding in the
lovo of Cod, no government or society or way of lift
will tong persevere ond the freedoms which wo hold
so door will inevitably polish. Thorefore, even from
a selfish point of viow, one should support the Church
for Hit soke of the welfare of himself ond his family
leyond that, howtver, every person should uphold
and participate in Hie Church because it tells Hie truth
about man's life, death and dostiny; the truth which
alone will sot him ftto to live os a child of Cod.

To a child a band-aid is the quickest cure, and
will heal and protect any wound. This is a
wonderful trust . . . how wonderful it would
be if we would place the same trust in the Lord.
"Ye that fear the Lord, trust in the Lord: he is
their help and their shield" Confidence and
faith grows greater with practice. Attend
church regularly, study God’s word and ...
“they that know thy name will put their
trust in thee: for thou. Lord, hast not
forsaken then: that >eek thee."
