Q. How do I determine
that my earnings are
! being credited to my
■ Social Security account?
A. You need to request
a “Statement of
Earnings Card” from
your local Social
Security office. It is
recommended that you
do this every t wo or three
years so that your record
can be corrected if an
error is discovered.
Q. When shoul I submit
my medical insurance
bills?
A. Medicare has a time
limit for the submitting
of medical insurance
claims. For services
received between Oct. 1,
1978 and Sept. 30, 1979?
you must submit the bill
by Dec. 31, 1980. For
services between Oct. 1,
1979 and Sept. 30,1980 the
claim must be submitted
by Dec. 31, 1981.
Q. Should I file an
annual report with the
Social Security office if I
earned less than the
allowable amount and
received all my checks
last year?
A. No. The annual re-
port is necessary only if
you earned over the
allowable amount;
however, if you
anticipate earnings over
the allowable amount for
the current year, you
need to contact your
local Social Security
office and file a report of
work for the current
year.
Q. Does my wife
receive one half the
amount of my Social
Security when she
retires?
A. If your wife starts
drawing a wife’s benefit
at 65, she will be entitled
to one half your benefit.
If your wife retire before
age 65, then her benefit
would be reduced. The
amount of the reduction
would depend on when
before age 65 she started
receiving benefits. Age
62 is the earliest she
could draw a wife’s
benefit. If your wife has
worked under Social
Security and is insured
on her own record, she
would receive benefits
on her own record. If her
own benefit is more than
one half of your benefit,
she would receive only
the benefit on her record.
Q. I’ve heard that I
have to pay more in
Social Security taxes
(FICA) this year.
A. The rate of tax is the
same for 1980 as it was
inl979, 6.13 percent on
wages and 8.10 percent
for self employed people.
The only increase to you
would occur if you earn-
ed over $22,900 since the
maximum taxable limit
went up in 1980 to $25,900,
in lf979, it was $22,900.
Q. When I file for
Social Security Disabil-
ity, will I be examined by
a doctor?
A. Whether or not you
are examined by a
doctor, called a consul-
tative examination, is
dependent on several
factors. First, you must
be insured for Social
Security Disability
under the law. Secondly,
it is up to the disability
examiner who reviews
your case as to whether
or not you go to a
consultative exaination.
Applicants for Social
Security Disability are
sent to a consultative
examination only when
the disability examiner
feels there is a gap in the
person’s medical record,
more information is
needed, or current infor-
mation is important, to
make a medical
decision. Therefore, a
consultative examina-
tion is very rarely a
complete physical
exam. Generally it is for
a specific purpose.
