PRAYER: A WASTE OF TIME?
Part 1
When you think about prayer, you may have some
questions that need to be honestly asked and dealt
with. Some possible questions that may surface—
"Why don't I feel God's presence when I pray?"
"Am I just talking to myself?"
"Do I just want God near me. or will I allow him to
fill me?"
"Is your view of prayer generally, that you should
speak while God listens?"
"Doesn't God have anything to say?"
"Does God answer all prayer?"
Prayer involves many things. Hebrews 4:16 teaches
us that prayer is coming into the presence ot God.
Prayer is also a two-way conversation with both you
and God speaking and listening. Prayer is our way of
communicating with the creator of the universe I What
an astounding fact this is One of the most important
(yet often difficult) arts for a Christian to learn and
experience is the art of prayer. A well known Christian
speaker and author. Jack Taylor, writes that, “No
believer's spiritual lite will rise above the level ot his
praying." (Prayer: Life's Limitless Reach) To often
we "believers" neglect our need to pray.
What then is prayer? Matthew 7:7-8 gives us some
insight into a definition of prayer. Prayer is "asking
when you know God's will: prayer is "seeking" to find
God's will; and prayer is "knocking" at the door until
God speak.
Why should we pray? Luke 18:1 tells us that Jesus
began telling a "parable to show that at all times they
ought to pray and not to lose heart." Men should
always pray!
1. Because there is joy in prayer...!John 16:24)
2. Prayer can unlock the treasure chest of God's
wisdom... i James 1:5)
3. Because it is a sin not to pray...(I Samuel 12:23)
Sinners can be saved when they pray in
faith...(Romans 10:9-13)
5. Jesus, our divine example and God's Son.
- prayed...(Luke 9:29. Matthew 26:36-44)
6. We are instructed to pray without ceasing...! I
Thessalonians 5:17)
7. Prayer changes things...! James 5:17-18)
The list could continue on but I am sure you get the
picture. We don't have to look very far to find a reason
■ to pray. I encourage you. even challenge you to open
God's Word and read each reference given in this
article! Let the Bible speak to you. Begin to discover
the art of Prayer.
Next Week: How does God answer prayer? Does He
always give an answer to our prayer? What are some
causes for failure in prayer?
