THIS WEEK’S SERMONETTE
IS CONSCIENCE A SAFE GUIDE
By H. L. Cody
“There is a way which seemeth right unto
a man, but the ends thereof are the ways of
death” (Proverbs 16:25).
There are many who think that it does
not matter what one believes or does in
religion just so he follows his conscience and
does the best, he knows. Yet, the Bible de-
clares that a person may follow a way that
seems right and that way in reality be wrong.
Conscience is the exercise of one’s judg-
ment or power of feeling that enables him
to know when he is doing what he has been
taught to be right. It excuses or accuses
one for his conduct (Romans 2:12-15). It
bears wtness (Romans 9 :1). It is the part
of the mind that enables us to know when
we go contrary to what we have been taught
to be right. i
Conscience serves as a court. The court
dofes. not make the law, but decides if con-
duct, has been in accord with established
law. When one is doing what he has been
taught to be right, his conscience is referred
to as “good” (Acts 23:1); “pure” (2 Tim.
1:3) ; “void of offence” (Acts 24:16). If one
violates the, warning of conscience, he de-
fies it (Titus 1:15), and may eventually
sear it (1 Tim. 4:2). Conscience should not
be violated (Romans 14:14). We should
never do that which we know or think is
wrong. However, to think a thing is right
does not make it right; but to do that which
we doubt is sin (Romans 14:23). If we
doubt the safety of a bridge, the proper
thing is to stay off it until we find out that
it is safe. The same principle applies in
m oral and religious questions.
Conscience is formed by teaching, primar-
ily.: Although there may be some inherent
perception of right and wrong concerning
questions of morals, yet religious convict-
ions are formed by teaching. Those who ____________ _________ _
conscientiously try to keep the seventh’ day guide (the only one) because it shall ludge
sabbath do so-because they have been taught us in the last day (John 12:48).

that it is right. Mormons who live with
several wives can also argue that they do it
conscientiously. This does not make it right.
If a baby bom of Adventist parents be
adopted by Mormons and taught Mormon
doctrine, it would have a Mormon conscience
—if it, believed their teachings.
Instead of conscience being a safe guide,
it must be safely guided. It must be formed
by the right teaching of God’s Word. Hence,
We are commanded to teach. Only the truth
can make us free (John 8:32); and it can
not make one free until believed and obeyed
(1 Peter 1:22).
'The practices of the heathens prove that
conscience conscience is not a safe guide.
Having been left to themselves, their prac-
tices are far from being in harmony with
the truth of God’s Word. If conscience were
a safe guide, it would guide the heathen
safely. There would be no need for mission
work, and no need for teaching. When Paul
went to Athens, he found the city filled with
idols and idol worship. They were very re-
ligious, but very wrong. They did not know
the true God nor how to worship Him. Their
conscience had not guided them aright. They
needed the truth to guide their conscience.
Today, Christ has all authority in religion.
His written word, as penned by the Spirit
through the inspired writers of the New
Testament is our guide. His Word is a safe

stomach with the intestines).
An association with cigareti
smoking, but no cause and
jecect yet established.
5. Amblyopia, dimness of
vision unexplained by any
bodily defect. An apparent
relationship between this ail-
ment and pipe and cigar
smoking, but no cause-and-
effect link yet made.
6. Cirrhosis of the liver.
There is increased mortality
from this among smokers,
but the evidence is not suffici-
ent to establish the cause and
effect link.
7. Infant birth weight.
Women who smoke cigarets
during pregnancy tend to
have babies of lower than
usual birth weight. But in-
formation is lacking on the
mechanism by which this
decrease in birth rate is
produced.
The report said that avail-
able evidence suggests the
exi stance of some constitu-
tional differences between
smokers and nonsmokers, but
it is still too meager to permit
a conclusion.
Deaths Increase
As to mortality among
eigaret smokers, the report
declared that one study has
shown that the death rate of
smokers of cigarets is about
70 percent higher than for
nonsmokers, and it added:
“The death rate increases
with the amount smoked.”
