Faces of God
"THE FATHER OF THE
EPILEPTIC BOY"
Mark 9:14-29
Human extremity is frequei
tly God's opportunity. Many
a man Las been won to faith
in God because there was no-
where else to go. A house-
afire religion is at best a re-
luctant admission of human
inability to cope with life.
The father of this boy had
exhausted all the possibilities
of curing him. He even bou-
ght him to the disciples and
"they were not able." He
had been rebuffed so many
times that even hi', approach
to Jesus for help refledted the
uncertainty in his mind. Per-
haps this was just another falsi
hope. "If you can do anything
was his qualifying petitifflm.
Jesus had to establish first
of all a firm basis of faith.
"All things are possible to
him who believes, " he assuret
the father. Faith is a prerequ-
isite for God's answer to peti-
tions. How many times are
our petitions blocked by a
mental "if you can do any-
thing" ? Jesus promised, "Wha
ever you ask in prayer, you
will receive, if you have
faith." (Matt. 21:22)
Unblief is the cemetery
of many petitions.
