THIS WEEK’S SERMONETTE
BASIS FOR LIFE
By L. J. Willis
“I have respect unto Thy commandments’’
Psalm 119:6
All men are not happy, but all desire to be.
The worldly and wicked are actually seeking
happiness as they engage in their sins. But
they nevefr really find it, for they lack the
sense of true values. Even those who attain
great wealth and honor are seldom happy, for
what they thought to be bliss proved to be
misery. In order to be happy a man must
receive a complete answer to the cravings of
his being so that mind, soul and body are
satisfied. This is possible only as the man
finds harmony with God.
The intellectualist seeks mental gratifica-
tion; the sensulist, physical fulfillment; the
moralist, ethical perfection; but all fall mis-
serably short. It is the law of God alone
which provides a satisfying answer to the
questioning mind. The law of God establishes
a proper relationship between Jehovah and
man’s soul to provide satisfaction for the
legitimate cravings, so that a complete bless-
edness prevails.
Men must first recognize that the Bible
comes to them on the personal authority of

God. The Word of God is not merely a recom-
mendation from God which may or may not
be obeyed. Rather it is a divine collection of
“precepts” which bind the heart and con-
science of man. If man obeys, it blesses him;
if he disobeys, it condemns him. One writer
emphasiased it well in the words: “We cannot
keep God’s commandments unless we learn
them, but we learn them in vain, unless we
keep them.”
As the Psalmist surveyed the scope of
God’s law with its requirements and blessings
he peayed, “O that my ways were directed
to keep thy statutes” (Psalm 119:5). If a man
Will abide in God’s law, however he will be
able to exclain, “Thy Word is a lamp unto my
feet, and a light unto my path” (Psalm 119:
105).
