THIS WEEK’S SERMONETTE
HANDLING LIFE'S
SECOND CHOICES
By Claude1 Cone, Pastor
First Baptist Church

Few persons have a chance to live their
lives pn a basis of their first choice. Most of
us live on our second or third choice. Whistler,
the artist, for example, started out to be a
soldier and failed at West Point because he
could not pass in chemistry. “K silicon had
been a gas,” he used to say, ”1 would hava
been a major-general.” Instead, he failed in
soldiering, half-heartedly tried engineering,
and . then tried painting—with such remark-
able results as one sees in the portraits of his
own mother, Miss Alexander and Carlyle.
Many, of us did not choose our present
vocation.. We had a first choice that may be
as different as night and day from our present
vocation. Perhaps some of you did not choose
to live in Howe. Your work brought you here.
There are: others who choose to have a long,
happy married life and death came into the
home and took one of the members away.
Our first choices are not always realized. We
live much of life on our second and third
choices.
Let us approach this inescapable human
problem of handling life’s second-best by way
of one of the most impressive exhibitions of
it in history. In the sixteenth chapter of the
book of Acts, in the record of Paul’s journeys
We read this: “When they were come oven,
against Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithy-
nia; and the Spirit of Jesus suffered them not;
and passing by Mysia, they came to Troas.
And a vision appeared to Paul in the night:
There was a man of Macedonia standing,
beseeching him, and saying, Come over into
Macedonia, and help us. And when he had
seen the vision, straightway we sought to go
fprth into Macedonia, coneluding that God
had called us to preiach the gospel unto them.”
So simple and succinct is this narrative
that one would little suspect that we are
dealing with one of the most significant events
in human history. Here Christianity passed
over from Asia into Europe. But Paul had
not planned to go to Europe; That was a
second choice. Paul had planned to go to
Bithynia: “They assayed,” it reads, "to go
into Bithynia.” And no wonder for Bithynia
was one of the richest provinces of Asia
Minor, and to have carried Christianity there
.Would have been a triumph indeed.
' Wanting Bithynia and getting Troas, how
"familiar an experience that is! But to take
' Troas, the second best, the broken plan, the
left-over of a disappointed expectation, and
make of it the greatest opportunity we have
ever had, how much less famliiar that is!
Yet, as one reads the story of human life,
one sees that powerful living has always in-
volved such a victory as Paul won in Troas
over his own soul and his situation.
Handle life’s second choices with reverence
because it may be God’s first choice. Our
first choice and God’s is often not the same.
We choose what appeals to us. Paul choose
Bithynia. It was his first choice. God gave
him Troas and then Macedonia. Paul woiud
not have been nearly as successful for God if
he had stuck with his first choice. When he
submitted himself to God’s first choice he
found God’s deeper purpose for his life. We
choose the easier way. God chooses to put
us where our lives can count the most. God

With the bank an established fact, let us
press on to other improvements in our little
city.
Number One: Arrangements for the health
care of our citizens. At the present time there
is no doctor, no drug store, and no hospital.
When a person gets sick it is necessary to—
yrell usually it is Sherman, and there are good
facilities there, though crowded and often our
people are delayed. This can be very serious.
Our Idea would be an elderly doctor who
wishes to sem-retire or possibly two a small
drug store and a little clinic with three or
four rooms where patients could be treated.
We understand that there are several, thre-
at least, registered nurses who would be
willing to accept at least part time work in,
such a hospital here in Howe.
Number two: Someone who is prepared to
buy and store grain and pay competitive
prices so that the farmers could bring their
grain here and not have to take it elswhere.
Let’s get Howe back on the line as a grain
market as she once was.
Number three: An automobile agency. One
handling both cars and trucks. There is a
good opening here for this line.
AND LET’S ALL
THAOS IN HOWE
has a purpose for every life. If we will let
Him He will lead us into the vocation where
we will be the most productive. He will place
us in the center of His divine will which is
always the best place to be. Even though it
may not seem best to us and it certainly may
not be our first choice!, we must still handle
God’s first choice with reverence. This is th©
happier life.
Handle life’s second choices as you would
your first choice. Go at it with all of your
heart. This is what Paul did. When he knew
that going into Macedonia was God’s first
choice the Scripture says, “Immediately we
endeavored to go into Macedonia, assuredly
gathering that the Lord had called us for the
preaching of the gospel unto them.” Paul did
not stop to pity himself because he didn’t get
to go to Bithynia like he wanted to. He didn’t
argue with God. He simply set out to follow
God’s leadership. He went to Macedonia as
if it were Bithynia.
There is a deep satisfaction in accepting
life’s second choice as God’s first choice and
then going at it with all your heart. You can
look back with no regrets. You can be
assured of God’s strength and power to help
you carry out His choice. You can see your
life count to the fullest. You can experience
victory and not defeat in life. When God
reveals to you His first choice for your life,
handle it with reverence and go after it with
all your soul. You will find your second and
third choices are really your first choice.

IN THE DEEP
BLUE SEA
Two-thirds of the earth’s
surface is covered by water.
Beneath the waves are su'-h
things as canyons reaching
seven miles below sea level,
mountains that rival Mount
Everest rising from the ocean
floor, and deep sub-surface
rivers that dwarf the Mississ-
ippi. In the oceans, too, is a
vast wealth of resources.
Scientists predict that one
day the ocean’s minerals will
provide much of industry's
raw materials and that more
than 300,000,000 cubic miles
of ocean water will be tapped
as a food source for the
world’s growing population.
In order to learn more about
the almost limitless potentials
that are to be found in the
ocean, the Navy is launching
a program in oceanography.
