TEXAS VOTED ONLY
44% OF VOTERS ELIGIBLE
Washington (UPI)—Only
44 perceint of Texas voting-
age citizens cast balots in
the recent election, the lowest
ranking of the heavily popu-
lated states.
Only seven other states had
a lower percentage of voter
turnout.
A record number of Amer-
icans voted in the election,
more than 69 million of them,
but when population increases
are accounted for, the per-
centage turnout was lower
than the turnout in 1960. A
record 63.1 percent of voting-
age Americans took part in
the Kennedy-Nixon balloting.
About 60.6 percent voted this
jyrar.
The percentage is based on
voting-age residents, not on
the turnout of registered
voters. Many thousands of
citizens do not register and
thus cannot vote on election
day whether they want to or
not.
Utah led the turnout fig-
ures with 77 percent. Missis-
sippi held up the rear with
33.2 percent.
Texas trailed the other
large population states—Illi-
nois, California, New York,
Ohio, Michigan and Pennsyl-
vania, in that order. Illinoise
led with 72.9 percent and Pen-
nsylvania, closest to Texas
in large state rankings, had
65 percent, 21 percent higher
than Texas.
