Go To Six Flags
The 4-H Club enjoyed
a trip to Six Flags, June 3,
the Howe School System al-
lowed us the use of a bus,
and we wish to thank them
for this use. And a special
thanks to Mr. Rutherford, who
drove for us.
Twenty-nine boys and
iris and six adults attended.
Due to conflicts in ac-
tivities and such, 4-H work
will be greatly reduced this
fall. Only boys and girls who
had show animals this past
year, may rejoin the club in
Sept., if they so wish. No
new members will be accep-
ted . If you feel your case
needs special consideration,
please call Mrs. Melton. It
is recommended that horse
owners join the Rangier Club
in Sherman.

Guar Makes
Good Cash Crop
For Texas farmers wanting
another cash crop, Texas A-
griculture Commissioner Jo-
hn C. White has the sugg-
estion they investigate the p-
ossibilities of growing guar.
And now is the time to
investigate, for the two pro-
cessing plants in Texas, at
Vernon and Kenedy, are now
contracting guar crops, and
word from them is that they
need about 250,000 more T-
exas acres planted to guar,
White said.
He also points out the
fact that about 40 million p-
ounds of guar gum were used
in the U.S. last year, but
only about 10 million pounds
were produced in this cou-
ntry.
Guar is that stalky plant
introduced to this country f-
rom India and Pakistan which
rotates well with cotton, so-
rghum, corn, and vegetables.
”it has been described,”
ip B&MWh
M
Commissioner White said,‘‘as
being without peer as a soil-
improving summer legume and
its influence on succeeding
crops as truly amazing.”
Growing guar does not re-
quire buying new types of ma-
chinery, the agriculturalcom-
missioner explains, because
it can be planted and culti-
vated about like cotton, and
the guar beans can be har-
vested with an ordinary grain
combine with little adjustment.
And it can be planted
on diverted acres (except c-
otton acres), another factor
that makes it more desirable
as a Texas money crop, W=
hite said.
Guar makes a good cat-
tle feed (contains about 35
per cent protein, only slightly
less than cottonseed meal),
and guar gum usages are 1-
egion , including use in ex-
plosives, adhesives, paper p-
roducts, batteries, bakery p-
rodusts, cosmetic lotions, to
name a few.
For futher information
Commissioner White suggests
farmers contact Harold Co-
ombs at Kenedy or Norman
Brints at Vernon.
