Samuel
“Samuel grew, and the L-
ord was with him and let n-
one of his words fall to the
ground. And all IsraeL..knew
that Samuel was established
as a prophet of the Lord (3:19).
Samuel was a king maker
hi Israel. He chose Saul, I-
srael’s first king, and David
his successor. Samuel was the
last to combine in one per-
son the offices of judge, P-
riest, and prophet. He is one
of very few men in the Sc-
riptures about whom there is
recorded not one instance of
wrongdoing. When he was ab-
out to turn the government
of Israel over to Saul, the n-
ew king; he demanded an au-
dit, as it were, of his admin-
istration, and tile people res-
ponded; “You have not defr-
auded us or oppressed us or
taken anything from any man’s
hand” ( 1 Sam. 12;4).
Samuel’s abdication of the
judgeship did not diminish ei-
ther his activity or his inter-
est in the affairs of the na-
tion. He was the counselor
of the young king, albeit his
counsel was not always foll-
owed. He continued as the con-
science of Israel and repeat-
edly called on them to renew
their vows to serve the Lord.
^® officiated regularly in the
offerings of sacrifices. Here-
built the altars of IsraeL
In the separation of the
temporal responsibilities un-
der the new king, from the
spiritual which he retained,
Samuel saw the waning of spi-
ritual leadership. He rebuked
Saul for his effrontery to in-
vade the sanctuary of the tab-
ernacle by assuming to offi-
ciate at the sacrifices. In his
later years he established a
“school of prophets” that th-
ere should never cease to be
a prophet in Israel to call
the people to serve the Lord.
In his final benediction he sh-
owed his steadfastness both to
his people and to the Lord:
As for me, far be it from
me that I should sin against
tfie Lord by ceasing to pray
for you; and I will instruct
you in the good and the right
way. Only fear the Lord, and
serve him faithfully with all
your heart” (1 Sam. 12:23-24).
