Cold Catching Facts
What do garlic, onions and
salted herring have in com-
mon besides the makings of a
very peculiar culinary con-
coction? All have served as
supposed “cures” for the com-
mon cold at one time or an-
other.
The mystery of the cold
has been a source of irritation
to man for thousands of years
—and still very little is known
about it or its cure. From re-
search we do know that:
—People in metropolitan
areas get more colds than
those in rural environments.
—Children catch the great-
est number of colds.
—Women have more colds
than men.
—Single people have fewer
colds than married people.
—People over 60 have the
fewest number of colds.
But still there are no sure
cures. We do know, however,
that there are ways you can
make yourself more comfor-
table when you come down
with a cold. A new booklet
from the manufacturers of
Sucrets Sore Throat Lozen-
ges, called “The Cold Mys-
tique” offers advice on how to
treat colds—and suggests wavs
to avoid them. too.
BASKETBALL
If you have not been to see
a High School game this year
or have been to only a few
try to make it to Leonard to
see Howe's last regular season
game on Friday, February 2.
The staff members of the
Sherman Public Library cordi-
ally invite you to have coffee
and doughnuts with them and
to tour the new library faci-
lities at 421 N. Travis on Jan-
uary 31, from 11:30 to 1:30.
They would like to show you
the business collection and
hear your suggestions for ma-
terials that should be added to
it.

AUSTIN—Greater oil and
gas production to pare down
Texas energy shortages is the
aim of companion bills intro-
duced in the Texas Legislature
this week.
The measures would liberalize
unitization requirements for oil
and gas fields so as to increase
production of oil and gas re-
serves, according to sponsors of
the legislation, Sen. Jack High-
tower of Vernon and Rep. Dave
Finney of Ft. Worth.
They said the legislation
would help accomplish one of
Gov. Dolph Briscoe’s goals: To
get the maximum recovery from
reserves as one of the means to
solve the energy shortage.
A major obstacle, aside from
technological aspects, prevent-
ing the tapping of part of the
98 billion barrels of Texas oil
reserves has been an obsolete
oil-gas unitization law that re-
quires 100 per cent agreement
from operators and royalty
owners in a field to unitize, the
lawmakers said. The require-
ment has been so restrictive
that only one of every 10 Texas
fields now operates as a unit.
Under terms of the Hightow-
er-Finney proposal, a consent
majority of 75 per cent of all
interests would be required.
It is believed that several bil-
lion more barrels of fuel can be
recovered by removing restric-
tions, the legislators said.
Both legislators warned that
their proposal was not a cure-
all for energy shortages, but
would be a step toward greater
energy supplies.
