This “essay” (it is very short) is
of such significance because it is the
FIRST written by a Mexican au-
thor on this famous battle. He is
Gen. Sanchez Lamego, head of the
Mexican Defense Ministry’s Carto-
graphic Dept., a veteran of the Rev-
olution and leading Mexican military
historian.
Of special importance is that the
author had access to the Mexican
military archives.
You would expect, possibly, that
some new stories about the siege
would be told, or that some of the
disputed points would be cleared up,
but such is not the case. There is
an interesting commentary on the
Alamo battle flags that sounds plaus-
ible and possible. But for any start-
ling new facts about the Alamo bat-
tle, there are none. Even the- num-
ber of Mexican soldiers is not estab-
lished for sure by the Mexican au-
thor.
All serious students of Texas his-
tory, or Mexican history will' appre-
ciate this story written- from the
Mexican viewpoint, and by a Mexi-
can historian of note.—Reviewed by
L.H.G. (Note — The book is in the
Pharr Memorial Library.)
