Not only did the Sunny Glen
Home boys from San Banito time
have tough luck getting shots at
deer during Operations Orphans
in Mason County but they ruined
some of the meat they did get.
Don Abbott of Brownsville,
president of the Valley Sports-
men Club who accompanied the
18 boys to the shoot, said the
weather was so cold, windy and
wet that deer almost refused to
move. Thus about the only shots
the boys got were at deer flush-
ed out of the brush. The boys
got only “going away” shots for
the most part. Bullets entering
the flag area weren't exactly
what you would call “clean hits.''
The Brownsville man said the
Sunny Glenners, whom he de-
scribed as “a clean set of boys,”
did not complain a bit about
their hard luck. They were able
to bag only about eight deer dur-
ing the annual shoot sponsored
by Sportsmen Clubs of Texas with
which the Valley club is affiliat-
ed.
The Valley Sportsmen Club
found out after the Valley boys
got back that Operation Orphans
had run out of oranges. John
Shary II of Mission volunteered
to get some oranges for the boys
who will be hunting the last
week-ends of the season.

There seem to be a lot of peo-
ple still who don’t know you
can’t go around shooting at al-
most anything wild that moves.

hawk. To many people any hawk
is a “chicken hawk” and should
be killed. Under the state law
ALL hawks are protected. Hawks
are beneficial, killing rodents
that are harmful to other wild-
life and to man. The victim us-
ually is the slow-flying hawk,
the most beneficial of all these
species.
Sometimes a huge toll is taken
of migrating hawks. The broad-
tails which migrate in huge
swarms, usually are exhausted j
from their long flights when
they settle down and are easy
victims of the trigger-happy
shooters who don’t care what
they kill. They usually clean up
on rats, field mice and similar
food when they spend the night
in an area and shooting them
is senseless.

own personal opinion is that
Alabama was over-rated this
year and should not have been
invited to a Bowl. Alabama has
played in so many bowls in the
past that they are on the bowl
list, if they have a respectable
won and lost record.

THERE ARE TWO HEAD
I COACHING POSITIONS in 4-A
Schools open in the South Texas
area. One being Edinburg, where
they have had trouble keeping
a head coach of late, and the
other is Alice, the perennial Dis-
trict champion, who fell to
Brownsville this year. Before the
season was finished, it was
“rumored” widely that Alice was
and JOHN PAVLICA. We could
run a list of those who say they
have not bagged a buck deer at
all, but will not do so, as by the
the time this is read, it may be
obsolete. . . Have not heard much
about the GOOSE HUNTING
this year. The geese are ‘round,
but you have to work harder at it
than usual. Some at the salt
lakes right now. . . .
JOHN SEITZINGER believes it
is better to hunt mule deer in
the Big Bend the second week
of the season instead of the first.
His party had a fine hunt this
year the second week and they
got larger deer and they saw
more of them . . .
Bears Lose to E-E
By 46-45 Score
The PSJA Bears lost a squeak-
er in the final seconds to Ed-
couch-Elsa at the Oso Dome
Tuesday night by the score of
46-45. Edcouch-Elsa scored in the
final 4 seconds to win.
The Bears had fought from a
1st quarter deficit to go ahead
in the final quarter.
This was the second time for
E-E to defeat the Bears. They
won over the Bears in the finals
of the Mission tourney.
High point men for the Bears
were Randy Foster with 12, Mark
Hall and Dicky Powers with 10
each and Gary' Day with 8.

If up to this time you still
haven’t decided what to give a
relative or friend or customer
for Christmas, consider some-
thing from the sporting goods
store.
It is still an easy matter to
make a gift of this kind even
though you don’t know what
your particular recipient might
like. If the clerks at his favorite
store can’t give you a tip as to
what he’s been looking at lately
you can always buy a gift certi-
ficate and he can make his own
selection of a gift. In that way
you will know it’s suitable.

Where will the new head
coaches come from? In the case
of Edinburg, we would say it
will be a 3-A head coach some-
where. Alice, we are sure, will
take a 4-A coach—but they might
, get one any where in Texas.
{ They will not confine themselves
I to just one area. Because of the
| great winning record of Alice
the last four or five years, they
will not have the difficulty
securing a coach as Edinburg.

IF AND WHEN A NEW
CAUSEWAY is constructed at
Port Isabel across the bay,, the
Valley Sportsmen’s Club is look-
ing ahead, and is already setting
up committees to work on mak-
ing the old causeway a “fishing
bridge”.
Up near Port Lavaca or Com-
fort, a similar think happened
a few years ago when a new
bridge was constructed across the
Leguna. The old bridge was
turned over the fishermen.
Lights were installed for night
fishing and it provides a fishing
“hole” for those who do not have
boats, for retired people, for
winter visitors, and for young-
sters, who can fish without adult
supervision. The Valley Sports-
men’s Club hopes the same thing
will happen at Port Isabel. In
due time, probably in five years,
or less a new causeway will be
constructed. Actual construction
will require 18 months or two
years after contract is let. Some-
thing will be done by 1972 and
| that will mean the old bridge
i will be “available” to some one
| for some purpose, in 1974 or ’75.
I We don’t know of a better use
' than to provide a new fishing
1 hole for literally thousands of
people over a year’s time.

THE SELECTION OF ARCHIE
CISNEROS, the PSJA fullback, j
on the Valley All Star team by!
the Freedom Newspapers, was a j
well deserved honor. The last of j
the season, he was the outstand-
ing back in the Valley.
Here are some impressive sta-
tistics he compiled: He was the
leading ground gainer for the
Bears in 6 out of the 10 games
played. The last three games of
the season, he rolled up more
than 100 yards in each game. A-
gainst Brownsville, he had 158 j
yards; against San Benito 102 and
against Edinburg 138.
For the entire season, he had
669 net yards in 135 carries for
an average of nearly 5 yards per
carry.
Another interesting character-
istic about him he rarely lost
yardage or had no gain. He was
always able to make a couple
of yards, when there was no
hole.

ODDS & ENDS PICKED UP
here and there in the world of
sports — Years ago, this newspa-
per used to carry lots of articles \
about deer hunters and their first
bucks of the season. (Usually,
the second buck, if they got a
second one, was never revealed
until the season was over). Now,
they don’t even want to report
the FIRST BUCK. But some of
those who have bagged bucks
this year include ROY BARNES,
