American Cancer Society
Presents the Golf Clinic
An interesting statement in an article caught my eye
today as I perused my paper. A woman on trial for child
abuse was accused by her two son s of chargi ng th t m $100
per month for room and board. They accused her of other
things too but the room and board charge hardly seems
like evidence of child abuse.
There are different kinds of abuse. Probably the two
most prevelant are psychological abuse and physical
abuse. I heartily disapprove of both. Like most efforts to
correct social ills there is the ever present danger that the
pendulum will swing too far in the opposite direction. It
is my considered judgement that a slightly bruised bot-
tom on a child is preferable to a strong willed, undisci-
plined adult. Being a successful parent is an awesome
responsibility. Walking the tight rope between building
character and possible child abuse takes all the skill a
parent can muster. I subscribe to the old adage, "a pat on
the back develops character, if administered low enough,
hard enough, and often enough."
Is there a parent so callous that they wish for their
children a life of mediocrity and failure? Very few I think.
Therefore it is incumbent upon the conscientious parent
to not only teach their children right from wrong but to
train them to face fearlessly the problems of living in an
imperfect world. Payingyour way should begin as soon as
a child starts working for pay. If children learned earlier
in life that certain obligations have priority, there would
be fewer adults charging themselves into bankruptcy. If
a parent fails to teach this basic economic fact to their
children, isn't this also a type of abuse?
Child abuse must be dealt with but shouldn't we be
careful that we don’t simply exchange one type of abuse
for another more insidious type?

HC Electric Offering
Electrical Safety Program
We depend on electric-
ity every day of our lives.
We use it at home, work,
and play.
When used wisely, elec-
tricity is safe. However, it
can also be dangerous.
Many times people are not
aware of the danger and
are careless.
Hill County Electric
would like to make the
public more aware of the
dangers of electricity by of-
fering a new safety pro-
gram, The new safety pro-
gram will feature Max, the
lineman, teaching us
about hazards and how to
watch for unsafe electrical
conditions that need to be
reported to the Coopera-
tive.
If you would like to
schedule a safety program
for your civic group or
school, please contact Bob

Men who turn 26 dur-
ing the remainder of 1987
will be reaching an impor-
tant milestone according
to the Selective Service
System.
Young men born in
1961 were required to reg-
ister with Selective Serv-
ice in July of 1980 when
President Carter reinsti-
tuted the registration re-
quirement. These men
turn 26 in 1987. Selective
Service does not have the
authority to accept a
young man’s registration
after he has reached his
26th birthday.
Harold Doyle, Texas
Selective Service State
Director, warned that,
with few exceptions, a
man who fails to register
before turning 26 will per-
manently forfeit his eligi-
bility for federal student
financial aid, job training
benefits and most federal
employment. Addition-
ally, non-registrants face
possible prosecution as
felons.
Texas has registered
nearly one million men
since 1980.

I am home in heaven, dear ones;
All's so happy, all's so bright!
There's perfect joy and beauty
In this everlasting light.
All the pain and grief are over,
~ Every restless tossing passed;
V" 1 am now at peace forever,
’ Safely home in heaven at last.
Did you wonder I so calmly
Trod the Valley of the Shade?
Oh, but Jesus' looe illumined
Every dark and fearful glade!
And He came Himself to meet me
On the way so hard to tread;
And with Jesus' arm to lean on,
Could I have one doubt or dread?
Then you must not grieve so sorely,
For l love you dearly still:
Try to look beyond earth's shadows,
Pray to trust our Father's will.
J There is work still waiting for you,
So you must not idle stand;
Do your work while life remaineth—
You shall rest in Jesus' land.
When that work is all completed,
He will gently call you home;
Oh, the rapture of the meeting!
Oh, the joy to see you come!
