Breast cancer patients
need friends who listen
Women with breast cancer of-
ten discover that what they need
most is difficult to find shortly
after diagnosis, friends who will
listen.
"Sometimes, it's a case of
friends not knowing what to
say," said Dr. Lois Friedman,
associate professor of psychiatry
and behavioral sciences at Bay-
lor College of Medicine in Hous-
ton. "Rather than risk saying the
wrong thing, they stop calling at
all."
Friends also may offer unso-
licited advice or insist that the
patient keep a positive attitude.
"Breast cancer presents many
challenges," she said. "Often, a
woman's support system
changes because the people
around her are also frightened."
Friedman said that while
many women are fortunate to
have supportive friends who
rally around them, others find
themselves separated from what
once was normal.
"It's not because people are
being mean," she said. "They're
frightened and they don't know
what to say."
Friedman said the insistence
on a positive attitude is not al-

ways good advice.
"Although optimism is a use-
ful coping strategy and very
helpful in a variety of ways, first
you need to grieve. Only by ini-
tially grieving can you then take
on a more optimistic view," she
said.
And, the shared stories of oth-
ers' experiences with breast can-
cer should be shelved.
"Cancer stories are not typi-
cally helpful," Friedman said.
The most important thing a
good friend can offer to a newly
diagnosed breast cancer patient
is to listen.
"You don't really have to say
anything. Just be available and
listen," she said.
Friedman leads support
groups for women with newly
diagnosed breast cancer at the
Breast Care Center at Baylor
College of Medicine and The
Methodist Hospital.
"It's helpful for women to be
with others who have the same
concerns," she said. "Some
women are afraid they'll hear a
lot of frightening things in these
sessions but that's not what it's
about. It's about learning ways
of coping."

Birome and Penelope News
_By Jan DeLapi, Daughter of Mozellc Brown Austin J
"Happy Birthday to me! Happy Birthday to me! Happy Birthday
dear me, Happy Birthday to me!" I know you have heard of people
talking to themselves, well, I sing to myselftoo! Happy Birthday also
to Brenda Christian Milsap, formerly ofBiromeand Michael Kasberg,
presently of Birome.
We have had the most beautiful weather lately with sunny, warm
afternoons and cool (sometimescold) nights and mornings. A neighbor
arranged to have my garden tilled with a biggg tractor, saving me
hours with my tiny one. Isn't that super? I have wanted to have that
done in the early fall (or winter) for every year I have had a garden
here in Birome. See, if you wish long and hard enough, wishes can
come true! (Thanks, Bernie).
I know you have heard your fill offish stores" about the one that
got away that was thissss big! Well, I heard a "Deer" story the other
afternoon that I know was true but sounded kinda fishy. Okay, I'll
tell you. Seems this guy was taking advantage of the last day of deer
season and really wasn't expecting much - just enjoying the sport of
hunting and being with friends when what should appear but deer!
Notone, not two, but three! Now here's the "fishy" or "deery" part...he
took aim, not careful aim necessarily, just shootin' and BANG, fired
his rifle and "two" fell. Right? Right. Seems the bullet went through
one and into the other and he truly killed two deer with one shot! I
have to admit until then, I just thought it was just regular hunting
talk. Of course he went into more detail, but as I said I was only half
listening until that part, I don't remember. I will say I have heard of
"killing two birds with one stone" but never "downing two deer with
one bullet". Congratulations to...well, you know who you are!
Wedding bells rang in the chapel recently for a lovely lady that
once called Penelope home. She is the mother of a PHS classmate
(until she quit and got married), Dora Willis Geltmeier Day. After
being a widow of some 30 odd years, she found a companion that,
from what I have heard treats her like a queen. Give up guessing
whom? Okay. Here's the scoop given to me by her granddaughter,
Kim Quiram. Mildred Willis, 81, of Hubbard and Fred Walker, 84,
of Dallas were married Saturday, January 12 at 11 a.m. at The First
ChurchofGod in Hubbard. Herchildren,Donald WillsofGrapeland,
Texas and Dora Willis Day of Cleveland, Texas were present. Bro.
Michael Green officiated. Family and friends attended the wedding
followed by a small reception in the church's fellowship hall. The
couple will live in Dallas. Congratulations and may God bless your
union with much happiness.
I am sure there is more news but since I have been so busy
celebrating, this is it!
Wellllll, until next week...from my "Faith Is" daily devotional
calendar..."Faith is resting by His side, where the tranquil waters
glide; Born of Him, through grace renewed, by His love my will
subdued. Rich in faith I will would be; let my Savior dwell in me" by
Fanny J. Crosby. May God's grace give you both comfort and joy this
day.

Pay no attention to those who
say it’s too late to start over.
Ignore those who say you’ve tried
and failed. Give up.
David committed adultery. But
he confessed his sins and was
cleansed. Starting over, he wrote
the Book of Psalms. They glow
with living coals.
Mark, the tour-manager, be-
came a deserter. But the coward
became courageous. He wrote the
Book of Mark.
Peter denied the Lord. But he
repented and was renewed. He
became the most valuable of the
Apostles.
Failed? On this New Year
accept God's pardon and power.
Start over and, by His grace,
succeed.
