Trojans fall to Clifton 49-39
The West Trojans lost their
only game last week as they
fell to the Clifton Cubs 49-39 in
a low-scoring basketball game
on Nov. 28 in Trojan Gym.
"We played good in the first
quarter and then seemed to
run out of gas," West coach
Wayne Leek said concerning
his team's play against Clifton.
Indeed the West squad
started out in fine fashion
jumpii >g out to a 14-5 first quar-
ter lead. The Cubs out scored
West 11-6 in the second quar-
ter as they narrowed the Tro-
jan lead to 20-16 by halftime.
Clifton then overtook West in
the third quarter in capturing
a 35-28 third quarter lead.
"We had too many turnovers,"
Leek said as his Trojans commit-
ted 26 turnovers in the game.
Brad Ferguson led the West
scoring attack with 11 points fol-
lowed by Naon Moore with 10
and Cameron McCreary with
eight. McCreary turned in a fine
rebounding performance as he
pulled down 15 in the game as he
grabbed six offensive and nine
defensive rebounds in the con-
test. Ferguson added 11 re-
bounds and was credited with a
team high three assists.
West did not play last Friday
and resumed played on Tuesday
as they journeyed to Mexia to
play a talented Blackcat squad.
Starting Thursday, the Trojans
are hosting the West Kolache
Klassic and will be among the
eight boys varsity teams com-
peting in the tourney. Their
first round opponent will be
the Reicher Cougars in a 7:30
p.m. game at West High
School's Trojan Gym.
The tournament continues
through Saturday and will in-
clude boys' teams from
Grandview, Lorena, Aledo,
Lake Worth, Whitney and
Axtell. Coach Leek said they
have increased the tourney
from a four team format to eight
this year while added they plan
to continue to try to make it
one of the better tournaments
in the area.

Kolache Klassic starts
Thursday in West
The West Kolache Klassic basketball tournament, sponsored by
the West Athletic Booster Club, is scheduled for today (Thursday)
through Saturday in the two West High School gyms.
The tournament begins at 3 p.m. Thursday as the Marlin and
Whitney girls play in first round action in Trojan Gym. At the same
time, the Lorena and Whitney boys are scheduled to play in the
practice gym.
First day action continues at 4:30 p.m. as the Grandview and
Aledo boys play in Trojan Gym and the Axtell and Lake Worth boys
have a game in the practice gym. At 6 p.m. the West Lady Trojans
face Reicher in Trojan Gym and the Medidian and Axtell girls play
in the practice gym. The final first round games begin at 7:30 p.m.
as the West Trojans face the Reicher Cougars in Trojan Gym and the
Vanguard and Connally girls play in the practice gym.
Friday's game are to begin at 12:30 p.m. with the final games
starting at 5 p.m. Action then resumes at 10 a.m. Saturday with the
girls championship game at 4 p.m. with the boys championship
game to start at 5:30 p.m.

West Bluebell Garden Club
will observe their annual Christ-
mas party on Thursday, Decem-
ber 14 at Show Room Cafe in
Waco.
All are to meet at the Public
Library parking lot at 10:45 to
carpool. Members can bring a
guest.
Spring registration
begins December 4
at TSTC
(Waco) - Texas State Techni-
cal College will begin register-
ing new students for the Spring
Semester December 4. Spring
Semester classes start January
11.
Registration will run from 8
a.m. to 6 p.m., December 4 and 8
a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays through
December 21, when TSTC will
close for the holidays. Spring
Semester Registration resumes
January 2 and continues week-
days through the first class day.
The college's extended and Sat-
urday registration times include
9 am. - noon, January 6; 8 a.m. -
6:30 p.m., January 9-11 and 9
a.m. - noon, January 13.
The new student registration
process begins in College Rela-
tions, located in the Student Ser-
vices Center on Campus Drive.
Returning students register in
their respective technologies.
Students can apply for a full
range of financial assistance,
from the federal Pell Grant to
guaranteed student loans. Be-
cause the aid application pro-
cess can take several weeks to
complete, those in need of finan-
cial assistance should contact the

Lady Panthers
named to
all district team
The Abbott Lady Panthers had
10 players named to the All Dis-
trict volleyball teams recently.
Senior Laura Hejl was chosen
the district's Most Valuable
Player and sophomore Kimberly
Skerik was chosen the district's
co-defensive player. Coach Gayla
Parker was named the Coach of
the Year.
Hejl and Skerik were also
named to the first team as were
Abbott seniors Crystal Jernigan
and Lisa Smith.
Seniors Diane Veselka and
Katie Tufts along with sopho-
more Katie Faglie were selected
to the second team.
Abbott players named to the
honorable mention list were se-
nior Amanda Gibson, junior Julie
Vybiral, sophomores Holly
Lenart and Andrea Sewall and
freshman Kelly Lenart.

The West Lady Trojans played
four games last week as they
continued preparations for Dis-
trict 17-AAA basketball action
which began this week.
West hosted the Lady Cubs
last Tuesday and fell by a 44-34
score after trailing at the end of
every quarter. Clifton had a 9-5
first quarter lead and were ahead
17-13 at halftime. Their lead was
33-27 following three quarters.
Amanda Horton led the West
attack with 10 points followed by
Melissa Maler with seven and
Callie Grochoske with six. Angie
Evans was the high scorer for
Clifton with 10.
The Lady Trojans then played
in the Whitney Basketball Tour-
nament beginningThursday and
won their first round game over
Mexia by a 56-33 score.
The game was close in the
first quarter with West taking a
32-21 halftime lead. West then
stretched its lead to 14 points in
the third quarter as they were
ahead 40-26.
Candyce Clifton turned in a
high scoring performance for
West in this contest as she net-
ted 21 points followed by team-
mates Horton, 10 points; Amy
Barton, eight, Cara Maler, six
and Gessica Eskew, five.
"Candyce had a big game and
Amanda also played well," West
coach Randy Ellison said.
West then played the host
Whitney squad in second round
action on Friday and fell by a 73-
39 margin.
The Lady Wildcats, who won
the tournament championship on
Saturday, had a high-scoring
first quarter as they took a 21-9
lead. They stretched their lead
to 35-16 at halftime and 51-22
after three quarters.
Clifton was the leading scorer
for West with 12 points followed
by Barton with 10. Whitney's
Ashley Johnson led all scorers
with 23 points.
"Whitney has an extremely
talented team this year," the
West coach said.
The Lady Trojans then played
Rio Vista on Saturday and fell by
a 69-41 score.
Again they fell behind early
as Rio Vista took a 20-12 first
quarter score. West trailed 36-
21 at halftime and 57-25 follow-
ing three quarters.
Horton was the only West
scorer in double figures as she
tossed in 12 points followed by
Barton, eight, and Maler, six.
Rio Vista’s Katy Cobb tallied 26
points to lead all scorers.
"Rio Vista is not a bad team,"
Ellison said while explaining, "we
are just not playing well yet." '*
The Lady Trojans hope to turn
their play around starting this
week as they host a strong La
Vega squad in their first District
17-AAA contest on Tuesday.
They then are scheduled to host
the West Kolache Klassic begin-
ning today (Thursday) and con-
tinuingthrough Saturday. Their
first round opponent in the West
tourney is Reicher as they are
set to play a 6 p.m. Thursday
game in Trojan Gym.
Abbott falls to Panther Creek
in state quarterfinal match
The Abbott Panthers' trip
through the Six-Man football
playoffs ended last Friday night
as they fell to the Panther Creek
Panthers 45-0 in the state
quarterfinal game in Dublin.
Abbott, District 16-A champs,
ended their season with an 11 -2
record as they fell to the unde-
feated Panther Creek squad.
This was the first Abbott football
team to advance this far into the
playoffs.
Panther Creek now advances
to play the Aquilla Cougars, who
last week defeated a fine Trent
team 45-42. The Cougars and
Panthers are scheduled to play
in the state semifinal game at
7:30 p.m. Friday in Comanche.
