For the past several years we have been warned that
foods we have eaten for years could be dangerous to our
health Milk and milk products and eggs could bring on a
heart attack. Coffee, tea and bacon could cause cancer.
Recently I read an article that said water could be a health
hazard, even distilled water and especially soft water.
Now I am not much of a worrier but if I was I would be
afraid to go to the table. It would appear that our choices are
rather dreadful. Either cancer, heart trouble, or starvation is
going to get us.
In a recent local newspaper someone asked the question,
"Can rhubarb be harmful, I heard it has a poison in it?” Dr.
Pluenneke answered the question. He said, “I can’t think of
any natural food that doesn’t have at least one potential
poison in it and many contain cancer-causing agents.” He
further pointed out, “Almost anything can become toxic if
you get an abnormally large dose of it.” Another interesting
point he made, “Rhubarb, spinach and a few other
vegetables contain oxalic acid which can tie up calcium.”
For years kids have been looking for a sound reason to
avoid eating spinach. It seems they now have it. No longer
can Mom command them, “to eat it because it is good for
you.” The secret is in the amount eaten. At more risk than
the child who has to eat an occasional helping are those who
are addicted to fad diets. I have seen diets that say eat all the
vegetables you want.
It seems to me that eating should be done in moderation.
We should eat to live not live to eat. I am not afraid of milk,
eggs, bacon, liver, steak, coffee, spinach or rhubarb. I eat
them all, except rhubarb. It isn’t the poison that frightens
me, it’s the flavor. One thing rhubarb is good for is polishing
aluminum pans. Cook some in one and see how shiny it
gets.
I think that too often our fears are aggravated because we
don’t have all the information. So until all the votes are in,
it’s bacon and eggs for breakfast. Coffee too.
