Mammography is a very
low radiation X-ray of the
breast. The procedure cre-
ates an image of the breast,
or a mammogram. It can
detect the smallest of breast
cancers. The earlier the
breast cancer is discovered,
the better the chance for
cure.
In the U.S., breast cancer
only follows lung cancer as
the leading cancer killer
among women. One out of

West Community Hospital
is now offering mammo-
grams. “Women between
the ages of 35 to 40 should
have a baseline mammo-
gram," says Nancy Boyd,
Director of X-ray at the
West Community Hospital.
“Women age 40-49 should
have a mammogram every
one to two years and once a
year after the age of 50.
There are a lot of women in
this area who need a yearly
mammogram,” she said.
Mrs Boyd also noted that
many women have just
realized the seriousness of
breast cancer. “Just in the
last few years public figures
Betty Ford and Ann Jillian
have helped educate the
public,” Boyd stated. Both
Ford and Jillian were
victims of breast cancer.
"Just this last year, Diah-
ann Carroll spoke on the
benefits of mammographies
in a national campaign. It
makes my job easier, when
people like that are inform-
ing the public about breast
cancer,” she said.
"If you fit in any of these
age categories, you definite-
ly need to see your physician
about having a mammo-
gram,” Boyd continued, “I
have even talked to younger
women who want to have a
mammogram since it can
detect cancer so much
sooner than a trained hand.
No matter what age you are,
you still need to see your
physician before you can
have a mammogram.”

Texans Could Save Money
By Quitting Smoking
HOUSTON - Five million
Texans could add years to
their lives, improve their
health and save nearly $500
each year if they did one
thing: quit smoking.
But doctors at Baylor
College of Medicine say that
while most smokers know the
reasons to quit, the habit is
still difficult and often almost
impossible to break.
To help smokers who want
to quit and those who are
helping someone quit, Baylor
is distributing a free brochure
on tips to quit smoking.
Smoking is the major pre-
ventable cause of fatal disease
in the United States. It is the
primary cause of cancers of
the lung, voice box, mouth
and esophagus, and accounts
for 30 percent of all cancer
deaths. Cigarette smoke is a
health hazard to the spouses,
children, friends and co-
workers of smokers.
Smoking is also becoming
a social and professional
stigma, the Baylor physicians
said. Smokers can expect to
pay higher medical bills and
insurance rates, in addition to
the cost of cigarettes.
Smoking one pack a day can
add up to nearly $500 a year.
Smokers find it easier to
quit if they know which of the
three kinds of cigarette de-
pendency, or combination of
them, they suffer from:
chemical dependency, habit,
or psychological depen-
dency.
Smokers who have a
chemical dependency on
nicotine may need to try
smokeless cigarettes or see a
physician for nicotine gum
until the addiction is
overcome.
When smoking is auto-
matic behavior, smokers must
develop other habits, such as
taking a walking instead of a
smoke after dinner.
Those who are psychologi-
cally dependent on smoking
to relieve stress must learn
other ways to deal with
anxiety, perhaps a regular
exercise program.
Once someone has
decided to quit, staying away
from cigarettes is the hardest
part, Baylor specialists said.
Smokers trying to quit need
support and understanding
from their friends and family.
Withdrawal is not as bad as
some might think. Symptoms
such as irritability, water
retention, and insomnia are
actually signs that the body is
ridding itself of poison. And
within a few weeks, the
Baylor specialists said, the
benefits of being a non-
smoker will begin to be
realized.
