If you have complained in recent years about not having cold
winters anymore, BITE your tongue. Winter has come with cold icy
winds and sleet and even some snow. Now let's have summer!
Those ofyou who know me know that I don't like winter. Well, this
year I really don't like winter because this year we are having cold
weather. I've already worm my heavy jacket more this year than I
have in several previous winters. Brrrr!
Bob and Jenny Martin and family, Claire, Jay and Cebia spent
time with both sets of grandparents. Ask them about snow and ice
and cold weather. They were in the Abilene and Coleman area
during the holidays.
James and Jean Harkins made their winter trek to Alabama to
visit their children, Mikeand Angle Horton and their grandchildren.
We always miss them when they leave, but know they are having a
good time in Alabama.
Ina Mitchell had surgery on her neck a little over a week ago. She
returned home last Saturday and is recuperatingat home. One ofher
daughters stayed with her part of the time. She said she is feeling
better, but that her hip really hurts worse than her neck. They had
to use part of the hip bone in her neck. Please keep Ina in your
prayers, as she recovers from this painful surgery.
Garlan Mitchell still needs our prayers, also, as he continues to
recover from his illness. His latest doctors have given a more
favorable report than earlier doctors, so pray they are correct in their
James and Kay Weinberger of Albert and Belle Crabb are still confined at home. Albert has
trouble walking and Belle's heart has given her some problems.
Albert and Belle, we miss seeing you at church and around town, but
we are praying for you and hope that you will soon feel much better.
We hope your holidays were pleasant and you were able to spend
some time with your families and friends. We did. We went to San
Antonio on Dec. 24, to spend time with my parents, Lee and Lois
Wick. Most of the sisters and brothers and their spouses were there,
too, so the seven of us "kids" and our spouses had a really good time
catching up on family news and visiting and remembering previous
times together. A number of the grandchildren did not get to come,
so we only had 49 there this year. But we had a wonderful time, and
more than enough to eat. Daddy and Mom are still in good health and
the rest of us are hanging in there. We always enjoy being together.
Colton Michael Weinberger

All of our children and grandchildren were able to be there, except
Randy and Sherry, who were snowed in, in Norman, Oklahoma.
Even though the weather coming home was rough, they were all
there. Then they all came back to our house the evening of Dec. 25.
We had our Christmas at home on Tuesday, but with lots of Mexican
food, instead of turkey. Tuesday evening everyone headed home and
the house was quiet for a few days.
Randy and Sherry came in Saturday afternoon, so all ofthe family
who could were back at the house again, to welcome them and to have
some more gift sharing. We also got to visit with Emily and Stacey
all of Sunday.
And the New Year's Eve church party planned at our house was
moved back into West, to the Fellowship Room after the icy conditions
developed. Several families braved the cold and ice, and stayed to eat
and play games. Those who did stay had a really good time, and we
all got home safely, despite the ice.
Thank you for allowing me to spend the past two weeks with my
family, instead of writing my article. We did enjoy our time together.
I did have a guilty feeling, though, as though I were neglecting
something or someone. You at The West News wouldn't have been
happy with my article, IF I had written it. My printer is not working
on my computer at home, so-o-o, you would have had to decipher my
handwriting.
Maybe that's why I have new computer fever......
Ina Mitchell called me with some interesting news. One of their
daughters, Karen Casares, of Houston, is a midwife in the Houston
area. She got to deliver the first baby born in Houston in 2001, 35
seconds into the New Year. She was really excited about that.
Teachers were back at school on Tuesday, preparing for the new
year. Lesson plans and grades and getting rooms ready for the new
semester all take time and time without students accomplishes so
much more. So we were all there on Tuesday. Then, ready or not,
school started on Wednesday. Back to the books and a brand new
semester.
Is this your week for a birthday? If so, and you are not on my list,
have a really great day. I'm behind again, after missing this writing
for two weeks, but will catch up. Those on my list are Guyla Smith,
Lisa Huffhines and our Kristi Kwast Shipman on December 23, our
Claire Martin and Bud Cammack on December 24, Saudi Farmer on
December 25, Cynthia Ross and Marie Hester on December 26, Lesa
Pechacek on December 27 and Suzanne Ferrero and Steve Rankin on
December 28. Mary Ann Johnson, David Scott and Barbara Sturm
all blew out candles on December 29.
Celebrating in the New Year are Susan Crain on January 2, our
good friend Robby Payne, Barbara Hykel and Beverly Sterling on
January 3 and Martha Sellers, Delores Cammack and Donna
Thompson on January 4. My sister, Beverly Moore, also celebrates
her day on January 4.
Neel and Joan Cosgrove, Steve and Debbie Cosgrove and Stefanie
all came down Sunday afternoon to visit with Myrtle Adair. Don
went over to see them for a while, but I stayed home with those who
were visiting us.
As you drive this week, do it carefully. Buckle those seatbelts and
drive as if your life depended on every move you make, especially
where it's icy. Take care, make a few good resolutions and work to
keep them.
If each of us resolved to be a better friend and neighbor, think how
much more pleasant our neighborhoods would be. Do you know your
neighbors??
