St. Mary’s School planning garage sale
St. Mary's School is planning a garage sale for the weekend o '
May 8 to raise funds to update the school library. Those wishing
to donate items for this sale are asked to please contact Valerie
Grimm at 826-7100 or Cindy Wells at 254-678-3284. Boxes for
donations will be located in the elementary building on St.
Mary's campus.
Recycling Day set for Saturday
The Cub Scouts ofWest Pack 494 are havinga recycling day from
7 a.m.- noon this Saturday in the parking lot at St. Mary's Schoo
in West. The scouts are also collecting newspapers and alumi-
num cans.
Little Trojan Cheer Camp
The West High School varsity cheerleaders will be hosting cheer
camps this summer and the deadline to register is May 12. For
girls ages 4-10, the camp is from 9-11 a.m. on June 21-25 in the
West High School gym. Another camp for girls entering sixth,
seventh and eighth grades is planned from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. June
28-29 in the high school gym. The cost of the cost is $30 and
registration forms are to be sent home from the school. For more

WHS Spring Drama shows scheduled
The West High School Drama Department is planning to have
spring shows for the public. On May 18, two shows of the play
"The Diner" are planned in the high school cafetorium. This
show is a comedy about the life of people who frequent a quaint,
little diner called "Ed's." The first show at 6:30 p.m. is a non-
musical version and the second show at 7:30 p.m. is the musical
version. Two days later (May 20), the drama department is to
perform "The Fledgling" at 7 p.m. This show is described as a
strange tale of fiction and suspense. Admission price for each
show is $1 for adults and 50 cents for students. All proceeds will
be used to help purchase costumes for future shows.
Pictorial church directories available
St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption Pictorial Directo-
ries are available at the church office, 303 S. Harrison in West.
The directories are $10 each and can be ordered by writing P.O.
Box 276, West, Texas 76691-0276.
Tasting Luncheon set for May 11
The Hillcrest Medical Center at West Auxiliary has scheduled
its annual Tasting Luncheon from 11 a.m. -1 p.m. atSt. Joseph's
Hall in West. The public is invited and tickets may be purchased
at the door. A drawing for a handmade quilt and door prizes
(donated by local merchants) is planned. Proceeds will be used
at the West hospital for special needs and for scholarships given
to students training for Health Care careers.
West chamber planning quilt show
The West Chamber of Commerce is planning a quilt show on
July 17 in conjunction with the First United Methodist Church's
Christmas in July event. The two events are both set for the
church in West. The chamber has their monthly meetings on the
third Monday of each month and all members are invited to
attend.
Operation Waterproof registration
The West PTA is helping with registration for MCC's American
Red Cross Swim Lessons, Operation Waterproof. Children must
have completed kindergarten and at least 36 inches tall to be
eligible. Bus transportation to and from MCC will not be avail-
able. Cost of the two-week long session is $29 per student. There
are only a limited number ofspaces available and reserve spaces
are on a first-come and first-serve basis with the deadline for
registering no later than May 10. Application forms are avail-
able at all West schools and for further information, call Jean
Smith at 826-5655.
Boys baseball signups
Any West area boy, age 15 or 16, wishing to play summer
baseball is asked to contact Barrett Ivy at 822-1901 or John Croll
ar 826-5253.
West Athletic Banquet set for May 10
The West High School Athletic Banquet, sponsored by the West
Athletic Booster Club, is set for 7 p.m. May 10 in West Fraternal
Auditorium. Tickets for the banquet will be available at the door
at a price of $8 per person.
West EMS Auxiliary to meet May 6
The West EMS Auxiliary has scheduled its regular monthly
meeting for 6:30 p.m. today (Thursday) in the Hillcrest Baptist
Medical Center at West cafeteria. Anyone wishing to join the
auxiliary is invited to attend.
Yearbook selling photos to raise funds
The West High School Yearbook staffhas approximately 100,000
photos ranging from the 1970s-1990sandissellingthe.se photos
at prices from 10 cents to 25 cents each to raise funds to cover the
cost of the yearbooks. This fund-raiser is planned from 9 a.m. -
noon this Saturday in the high school cafeteria. Also, anyone
who has turned in personal photos for yearbook use in the past
and never got them back, may also pick their pictures up at this
time.
Cemetery group to sponsor fund-raiser
The Prairie Grove (Greeny) Cemetery Association is sponsoring
a Bake Sale and Craft Sale beginning at 8:30 a.m. May 15 in the
cemetery's parking lot near Aquilla. The cemetery group is also
needing baked goods and crafts to sell at the fund-raiser and is
asking those interested in donating items to this event to bring
them on May 15. All proceeds are to go toward cemetery
maintenance.
Prayer Day activities planned in West
St.Mary’s School students to kickojf activities at 8:30 a.m. Thursday
Area residents are being asked
to join those throughout the na-
tion in participating in the An-
nual National Day of Prayer
planned for today (Thursday).
In West, two events are
planned in conjunciton with the
Day of Prayer on Thursday.
At 8:30 a.m., parents and other
individuals are invited to join St.
Mary's School students and staff
in a prayer service at the school.
This outside service is to in-
clude music and various prayers.
A human chain is also to be made
around the school with theis ser-
vice scheduled to last about 30
minutes.
The local prayer celebration is
planned from noon to 12:50 p.m.
at the gazebo on the West City
Hall lawn. This annual meeting
is becoming a tradition in West
and the May 6 event will be led by
local ministers and is sponsored
by the West Area Ministerial Al-
liance and the National Day of
Prayer Task Force.
St. Mary's fourth through
eighth graders are scheduled to
walk together to city hall to at-
tend this prayer celebration.
Americans gather nation-wide
for the annual National Day of
Prayer which has an estimated
1.5 million participants involved
in approximately 20,000 obser-
vances coordinated by 40,000 vol-
unteers.
This day»was established by
the U.S. Congress in 1952 and
signed by PresidentTruman, but
was observed by tradition for
many prior years. The first Day
of Prayer on record was actually
observed prior to the nation's
first birthday in 1775. In 1988,
the National Day of Prayer was
set aside by the House, Senate
and President Reagan for the first
Thursday of every May.

Also during the month, the
Rev. Crowder reported that
"Christians are going to gather
at every public high school and
middle school in McLennan
Cou nty to pray as we walk around
the school campuses. This Satur-
day will be the day that we can
participate in the "Prayer Walks"
for our schools."
The group is scheduled to meet
in the West High School main
parking lot to walk around the
campus praying for the high
school and then go to the middle
school where they will walk
around the campus and continue
to pray. "Our only goal is to walk
around the schools praying for
God's blessings and protection
on them."
City Council names emblem contest winners
The West City Council selected
the winning entries in its city
emblem design contest Tuesday
night during the council's regu-
lar meeting in West City Hall.
West resident Charlie Yerger's
design, showing a three dimen-
sional look of the State of Texas
with the words "City of West"
inside the state, was chosen the
first place winner and will re-
ceive $200 for being selected the
top winner.
Cash prizes of $25 each were
also awarded to Lt. Jeff Nors of
Watertown, New York (formerly
of West), Tammie Kramolis of
Abbott, BritneaMoroskyofWaco
and Travis Fagan Sr. ofWest for
their designs. Area residents are
invited to enter a design which
they believed best represented
the city.
City Secretary Kenneth
Kubala said the winning will
probably be modified to city's
needs. The emblem is to be used
on the city's official stationery,
vehicles, property and possibly
even a flag.
Councilmen Darrin Banikand
Mike Sulak served as coordina-
tors for this contest. "I am pleased
with the number of entries we
received," Banik said while ex-
plainmgthere were 15 individual
entries to go along with approxi-
mately 75 to 100 entries from
West Middle School sixth grad-
ers.
"Many of the entries empha-
sized West as the "Home of
Westfest" and their were other
entries using a Czech theme,"
Banik added.
The city council also discussed
future plans for the city-owned
Lurch Building on Main Street.
It was reported that the building's
roof was fixed and the council
decided to list the 12,000 square
foot building for lease or sale with
a local realtor.
An informal petition concern-
ing possible annexation of un-
annexed property located on the
west side of Jerry Mashek Drive
between Spring and Roberts
streets was presented to the coun-
cil. This property is located across
from the new high school facility
currently under construction.
The petition was signed by a
majority of the residents in this
area, however the council decided
to table taking any action on this
until more information on the
exact location of property lines
the area was available.
The council did vote in favor-
ing of rezoning the property at
409 S. Marable. This property is
to be rezoned from residential
use to restricted use as a bait
house only.
The council also gave its ap-
proval for the city to participate
in McLennan County's Littery
VIII planned for June 19 in Pre-
cinct 3.
The Hillcrest Medical Center at West auxiliary recently donated $6,200 to purchase these two
emergency transport stretchers (pictured above) to use in the hospital's emergency room. The money was
raised through sales in the auxiliary's gift shop at t'j>e hospital. Kristi Butts of the hospital reported that
sales in the gift shop have increased by 87 perceht druing the three-month period of October through
December. The main reason behind the dramatic increase has been the introduction of Beanie Babies
to the shopand their sales have skyrocketed revenues at the gift shop. In the picture on the right, Kristi
is shown with some of the Beanie Babies currently for sale in the shop.
West Lady Trojans were all smiles following their 1-0 victory over the Eastland Tuesday night in
Mineral Wells. The West girls now advance to the regional semifinals against Bowie later this week.
The exact time and date was not available at press time.
Two middle schoolers
arrested in connection
with bomb threat
Two West Middle School teenagers were arrested Tuesday in
connection with a bomb threat Tuesday morning which led to the
eventual evacuation of all three West Independent School District
campuses.
West Police Chief James Lawhorn said a 14-year-old West Middle
School eighth grade boy and a 13-year-old seventh grade boy at the
same school were taken into custody that same morning and later
charged with "a terroristic threat". They were taken to the McLennan
County Juvenile Detention Center in Waco. The pair were still in the
county facility as of Wednesday morning.
The West Police chief reported the West ISD administration office
had received the bomb threat call at approximately 7:30 a.m. and
school officials immediately reported the threat to proper authori-
ties. Lawhorn said his department was notified and they in turn
notified the McLennan County Sheriffs Department and their bomb
technicians. The West Ambulance was notified and the West Fire
Department was put on standby status as all three West ISD school
campuses were evacuated.

Westfest Mug Design contest
Westfest is sponsoring a contest to pick a design for a new mug for
this year's festival and the public is invited to enter.
The first place winner will receive $100 for their work and see it
on the new Westfest mugs sold at the festival this Labor Day
weekend. The second place winner will also be awarded for theft
effort and will receive a $50 cash prize and this design will be
considered for future use on a mug.
The deadline to enter the contest is May 17 and entry forms can be
obtained at Muska Insurance Agency or by calling Westfest at 826-
5058.
