West Kiwanis Club News
( New Arrivals )
Erika Marie Cervantez
By Cindy Hobbs
The Kiwanis Club of West met April 28 in the West Community
Center. President Edwin Nors and 46 members welcomed Jeanette
Sulak as a guest.
Blood drive chairman Ray Holasek announced the recent drive
netted 48 units of blood. This was an impressive show of community
support. Kiwanians helping with the drive were Jack Felts, Jess
Harrington, Darrin Banik, Frank Armstrong, Eddie Archer, Rich-
ard Sulak, Boyce Vardiman, and Barney Bradsby. Ray expressed
thanks to several citizens of West who volunteer for each Blood
drive. A hearty thank you is extended to Theresa Holy, Jeanette
Colley, Dorothy Polasek, Robert and Mary Zahirniak, Shirley
Willsey.
Vice President Banik introduced the guest speaker for the
meeting. Chief of Police James Lawhorn. Lawhorn has been with
the West Police Force for nine years and Chief of Police for almost
two years. He informed the Kiwanis members on efforts the police
force has been making in the community and West schools.
For the last year, the West Police Force has stepped up efforts to
educate the students in drug awareness and vehicular safety.
Programs have been presented in both the West Public Schools and
St. Mary’s on ‘stranger danger’ and seatbelt safety. Recently the
Force conducted an 'Ident-a-Kid' in conjunction with the West
Kiwanis Club. Working with the Ambulance personnel and Fire
Department, the West Police conducted a ‘Career Day’ at St.
Mary's.
In April, West High School students assembled to hear of a
Federal program called Operation Blackjack. Representatives from
the U.S. Attorney General’s office, Secret Service, TABC, and local
law enforcement personnel discuss fake ID cards, counterfeit cards,
alcohol for minors, and other laws and their consequences.
On May 4, the West Police Department held a program to educate
parents about drugs. This program dealt with identification of
drugs, paraphernalia, and signs of drug usage or possible drug
usage. Also, representatives were present to educate parents on
weapons and bombs in light of the tragedy at Columbine High
School.
Questions and answers followed Officer Lawhorn’s presentation.
