Lawn and Garden Care
By Mark Barnett
I
The Finishing Touches
Taking up where I left off last week, you have your tree in the
ground and you have put the soil back in the hole around it. Take a
stick or the handle of a shovel and make sure the soil is firm around
the tree. DO NOT pack the soil rock hard, just firm enough to make
certain there are no air spaces left in the ground around the tree's
roots.
You notice that 1 did not say to put any compost or other mix in the
soil with the tree. The theory at this time is that you want the tree
to start growing roots into the soil around it as soon as possible. The
thought is that by adding lots of nice stuff to the soil, the tree has no
reason to grow roots outward.
Now we add the nice stuff. Take the extra soil from the tree
planting or any other soil and make a containment area around the
tree, oh maybe 18 to 24 inches out from the trunk. If the tree is a very
large one, you may need to make a larger area. The idea is to contain
any water or nutrients above the root area so that they will soak into
the soil and not run off into the lawn.
Here we take time to add water and some nutrients to the soil.
Everyone has their favorite product to use. The two that I recommend
are either Fertilome Root Stimulator with rooting hormone or Hasta
Gro organic plant stimulant with seaweed. Both of these products
are very good. The new tree or shrub or flower or what ever you plant
needs a boost to get it started. These products, when mixed with
water according to instructions, can be used to your hearts content
without damaging the plants. Use these products at least once a
week for the first month then at least once or twice a month for the
first growing season. If there is any settling of the soil, fill in around
the plant.
This is where we add the compost or mulch. Fill the containment
area with either mulch of your choice or good course compost. I know
I said not to put anything up in the trunk of the tree, but that is why
I recommended a course mulch or compost. This allows the moisture
to drain through into the soil and not stay up around the trunk.
Well, more next week on watering and maintenance of your new
plant. Happy gardening!

West JV football splits pair of district
games against La Vega and Gatesville
The West JV football team split
a pair of games recently as they
pounded La Vega and lost a
heartbreaker to the Gatesville
Hornets.
In the La Vega game, the local
team won 26-6 on September 27 at
La Vega.
The offense started on its first
drive with the strong running of
Matt Dulock and Britt Craig. Craig
had a big run of 29 yards to the La
Vega 13 yard line and then Matt
Dulock rumbled in from 13 yards
for a touchdown with 8:02 left to
make the score 6-0.
West was not finished in the first
quarter as they got the ball and
scored again on a 5 yard scamper by
Clint Sykora with 1:12 left in the
period. Britt Craig ran in the
conversion to make the score 14-0.
La Vega answered with a 30 yard
pass to make the score 14-6 with
8:29 left until halftime but the
conversion was no good as Kevin
Poole sacked the quarterback.
West used ball control in the
second quarter as they melted six
minutes off the clock and went 75
yards on 14 plays culminated in a
33 yard run by Britt Craig on a
fourth and 13 play with :10 left
until halftime to make the score 20-
6.
The final score came as La Vega
was driving late in the game until
Cody Castro stepped in front of a
pass and intercepted the ball and
returned it 43 yards to the La Vega
23 yard line. Matt Dulock finished
the drive with an 11 yard run with
3:30 left to ice the game.
fr
The West defense stepped up
again as Bo Kutscherousky
intercepted a pass at the La Vega 30
yard line with 2:09 left in the
game.
In the Gatesville game, the team
dropped a hard fought 15-6 decision
on October 11 at Gatesville.
West scored first as Britt Craig
outran the Hornet defenders for an
89 yard touchdown with 6:52 left
until halftime to make the score 6-
0.
The game was dominated by
West in the first half and looked
like the Trojans were about to score
again until a fumble on the 4 yard
line with :44 seconds left killed the
drive.
The second half belonged to the
Hornets as they scored on a 15 yard
touchdown with 5:54 left in the
third quarter for a 7-6 lead.
Gatesville was about to score
again until Bo Kutscherousky
intercepted a Hornet pass in the end
zone and returned it to the 3 yard
line with 5:25 left in the game.
Gatesville played good defenas as
they tackled quarterback Clint
Sykora in the end zone for a safety
and a 9-6 lead with 4:45 left in the
game.
West received a break as Cody
Castro intercepted a pass after a
failed onside kick with 4:33 left in
the contest but the Trojans could
not capitalize on the play.
Gatesville scored with 1:24 left
to finish the scoring at 15-6.
The battle of the Trojans will be
Thursday as West plays Troy in
West with the freshmen beginning
at 5:30 and the JV around 7:30.

West Chamber of Commerce News
By Carol Bajer
\ -------
The monthly Chamber meeting was Monday night at the Katy
Depot. Debbie Keel, of South western Bell, attended the meeting. She
was there to present a $2,500 grant to the Chamber of Commerce
that was applied for, several months ago. She said she was pleased
to present it to the Chamber, as she is a citizen of West. This grant
money will be used to offset expenses to publish the "Discover West'
brochure. Watch for a news release announcing the presentation of
the grant.
Plans were finalized for the Halloween event. There will be
several officers and directors dressed in Halloween costumes and
they will be at the Depot passing out bags of candy and toys this year.
It will begin at 6 p.m. and stay until 7:30 p.m. So make plans to bring
all the trick or treaters to the Depot on Halloween night.
The Chamber also discussed the upcoming Christmas program
which is every year on the first weekend of December. The Chamber
will be having a program on Friday night and have Santa and Mrs.
Claus at the Depot on Saturday morning. The possibility of having
a parade of lights was also discussed. The Chamber would like to do
something extra this year. There is still time for planning and the
Chamber will let everyone know when a decision is made.
The Old West Trade Days was this past weekend and was deemed
a success. All booths were rented and the crowds were good, even
though it rained all day Saturday. The vendors were pleased and 30
have signed on for next month. Anyone interested in renting a booth
for November, please call the Chamber office at 826-3188 or toll free
1-866-826-3189.
"Wasn't that a terrible storm on Friday night? I was glad to hear
that there were no major injuries reported. Our sympathies go out
to all who lost property as a result of the tornado touching down in
several areas. I was told that the West Bank & Trust is accepting
donations for victims from the tornado and encourage all who can to
donate."
The Chamber collected $590 for the Red Cross World Trade
Center Disaster Fund and this money will be sent with a note
representing the citizens of West. Please accept the Chamber's
thanks for the donations. If anyone still would like to donate, the
Chamber will forward the money to the Red Cross. There are still
some flag/ribbon pins left and one is given to anyone who makes a
donation.
"1 had a meeting last week with the Jr. Chamber Members at High
School and they will be helping on the new 'Business Member of the
Month.' We will probably start on this at the beginning of the new
year. Watch for further details later on how to become the member
of the month."
The Trojan football game had to be delayed at halftime because of
the bad storm Friday night, with the score being 14 to 7. They
finished the game Saturday at noon. The final score was 28 to 7. The
Trojans played a hard game on a rain-soaked field. The next game is
in Troy at 7:30 p.m. this Friday. Please make plans to attend, as the
Trojans need everyone's support. "GO BIG RED."
Well, everyone, get bundled up, as it looks like it is going to be cold
weather the next few days. Then after that, who knows?

I had just picked up my photos from being developed and couldn’t
wait to see if I had a good shot. We had just returned from a hunting
trip and I was the only one who brought along a camera. Hopefully,
I got at least one good shot per roll of film. After reviewing over four
rolls of film, I got lucky. Turns out that six photos were what I call
"good."
Each year I shoot literally thousands of photos. Most of them are
of fishing and hunting adventures. But I shoot my share of family
pictures as well. I am not a professional photographer by any stretch
of the imagination. But my still shots and video work is certainly
respectable. So much so that I am appointed to shoot the family
holidays, birthdays and special occasions.
A nice photograph or video is something that most people can’t
take. With today’s modern point and shoot cameras, a quality
photograph or video is really pretty simple to shoot. By following a
few simple guidelines, you’ll be amazed how well your photos and
videos will turn out. The same basic principles that make for a good
photo will also improve your videos.
As far as print film goes, I recommend 200 speed for your everyday
outside photographs to be taken in sunlight. For indoor photos or for
night photos a minimum film speed should be 400. Even 800 speed
film works well at night. Typically, the higher the film speed (which
is written on the outside of the film box) the better it will be in low
light conditions.
Modern cameras have a very good range of settings that are pre-
set out of the box. For the most part, the average consumer never
needs to take it off auto. The problem many amateur photographers
have is they have never read the instructions that came with the
camera. Take the time to read the literature and become fully aware
of all the features that your camera is capable of.
For video, I suggest to turn the auto focus off. Leave everything
else on auto and simply manually focus the shot. In order to set a good
manual focus on the video camera, simply zoom in to an object in the
far distance. Obtain a crisp focus. Then as you widen your shot,
everything will remain in focus. Typically, outdoors people fail to
turn the auto focus off on their video cameras and, as a result, the
video camera is not certain on what to focus. This will happen when
videoing an animal that moves behind an object that is in the
foreground.
It may be obvious, but always try to keep the subject framed
correctly in the viewfinder. You have probably seen lots of shots
where the subject was cut out of frame. Lighting is also something
that is easy to control. As a general rule, keep the light at your back.
Shooting directly into light will typically shut the iris down on the
camera, making your shot dark and poor. But watch out for shadows
that may be cast upon the subject by you or anything else. Shadows
do not photograph well. Hold the camera still with little movement,
especially when you depress the shutter. I like to count to three and
say "cheese." This lets the persons in the photo know exactly when
to be at their best and to not have their eyes shut or not be smiling.
Video will always be best if you use a tripod. Nobody likes to see
shaky video and a tripod is a sure cure for that. Plus, I always turn
off the digital zoom on my video cameras. The optical zoom will
provide the best clear video. I like to use as much natural light as
possible, especially when outdoors. When shooting photos outdoors,
you’ll get much better color in your shot if you shoot early in the
morning or late in the afternoon. When the sun is low on the horizon
the natural colors are at their best and shadows are minimized. Ball
caps present problems for shadows on the faces of subjects. Encourage
your subject to slightly raise their cap and to look just above the
camera. By doing this, there will be less of a shadow on their face.
When shooting photos or video of dead animals make sure and
clean the animal up thoroughly, removing any blood, dirt or debris.
Position the animal in such a way that it is displayed with respect
and dignity. Remember to remove the tongue. Typically, shots of
deer look better when the camera angle is shooting upwards. Lower
yourself to ground level and you’ll notice a big difference in the way
the shot looks. Turn your subject in such a way to reveal its most
unusual and special features. I like to shoot both wide and tight
shots. Also remember to determine whether your subject would look
best with a horizontal or vertical photo. Fresh film and videotape will
look much better than old product that may have not been stored
properly.
These are some of the basics that will help you get the most out of
your photos and videos. This season remember to take your camera
along and use it. By learning how to take better photos and video will
give you a sense of accomplishment and pride.
One last thing, I have always had best results by choosing a photo
processi ng center that has qualified people producing the prints. Too
many times I have taken my photos to a developer who deals in
volume and been totally disappointed with the results, only to find
that when they are done again at a quality processor, the photos look
so much better.
