West Trojans fall to Gatesville
in game interrupted by storm
Friday night's stormy weather
interrupted the West Trojans
best effort of the season as the
Trojans finished the suspended
game on Saturday afternoon los-
ing to the Gatesville Hornets 28-
7 at Trojan Field.
West turned in a fine Friday
night performance against last
year's Class AAA state cham-
pion Hornet squad going into the
locker room at halftime trailing
only 14-7 as the visitor's pushed
across the go-ahead touchdown
on the final play of the half.
The storm, which produced a
tornado in the Tokio area and hit
a portion of the southern edge of
the city, then came and school
officials decided to suspend the
game until noon the following
day. "It was most important to
take care of the safety of the
kids," Wrest coach and athletic-
director Rick Wolf said concern-
ing the decision to delay the
game's second half. "We have a
lightning detector and it's a good
device to have for any outdoor
sport."
West fans found plenty to
cheer about in the first half as
t he Trojans got off to a good start
as Trojan Matt Matus recovered
a Gatesville fumble on the open-
ing kickoff on the Hornet 44. On
the Trojans' first play, Jason
Picha ran eight yards to the 36.
"Those were two big plays," the
West coach said. "I thought the
eight yard counter opened our
linemen's eyes that they could
move the ball on Gatesville."
Quarterback Heath Keel then
ran for three more yards for a
first down at the 33. The West
drive, however stalled, and they
had to punt the ball back to
Gatesville.
The Hornets scored on their
next possession as they moved
the football the ball 80 yards in
11 plays with Adam Phillips
rushing for the final four yards
and the score. The extra point
kick was good and Gatesville led
7-0 with 3:54 left in the first
quarter.
On Gatesville's next posses-
sion, the Hornets again looked
as if they would continue where
they left off following their last
touchdown, but the Big Red de-
fense came up with some key
hits to stop the Hornet attack.
On fourth down and one from
their own 48, Trojan linebacker
Coby Nemec came with a big
play as he met the Gatesville
runner head on, stopping the play
short of the first down marker.
"He had a big time hit and that
kind of woke us up," the West
coach explained.
The hit did seem to awaken
the Trojan offense, as Keel con-
nected with Jeff Zapalac on the
first offensive play of this drive
for a 39 yard pick up to the
Gatesville 9. From there, Keel
rolled right and out-raced Hor-
net defenders into the end zone
for the score. Josh Taylor kicked
the extra point and the game
was tied at 7-7 with 10:53 left in
the second quarter.
The Gatesville offense moved
the football on their next posses-
sion to the Trojan 21 before try-
ing a 38 yard field goal attempt
which missed.
Then with time running out
in the half Hornet quarterback
Matt Mooney connected on a 26-
yard scori ng pass. The extra point
was good and Gatesville went
into halftime with a narrow 14-7
lead.
"I thought the kids played ex-
tremely well in the first half,"
coach Wolf said. "The big sur-
prise was how physical we were.
I thought the first half showed
how good we can be. Every time
we take the field, this is the type
of intensity we need."
"Despite the (last second)
touchdown pass," the West coach
continued, "I definitely felt we
were going into the locker room
with some momentum, then
came the storms."
With the Trojans trailing by
only seven points, Wolf said his
team needed to play error-free
football. "We were going to try
and play a game of field position
in the second half."
The second half just did not
prove to be kind to the West
squad as they fumbled the open-
ing kickoff on the Trojan 26. Six
plays later, the Hornets hit pay
dirt on a four-yard run by
Phillips. The extra point gave
Gatesville a 21-7 lead.
"That (fumble recovery) gave
them momentum and once they
scored we had problems moving
the ball," the West coach said.
The Trojan defense did give
the offense an opportunity to get
on the scoreboard as Picha re-
covered a Gatesville fumble on
the Hornet 41. A pass to John
Kapavik gave the Trojans a first
down on the 29, but an intercep-
tion on the next play ended the
drive.
Ten plays later, Gatesville
scored thefinal touchdown of'the
game on a four yard run by
Lashon Taylor. The extra point
kick gave Gatesville their final
28-7 victory margin.
"Our kids came out and fiat
got after them," Wolf said con-
cerning his team's effort against
Gatesville after the Trojans less
than sparkling effort the week
before against the Bulldogs. "It
shows you that good things are
happening."
For the game, the West of-
fense had 64 yards rushing and
67 yards passing for a total of
131 total yards. The Trojans had
five first downs in the contest.
Keel completed, five of 11
passes for 67 yards with one in-
terception and he was the team's
leading rusher with nine carries
for 55 yards. Zapalac was the
Trojan's leading receiver with
two catches for 41 yards.
The Gatesville offense goner
ated 388 total yards in the game
as they garnered 278 yards rush-
ing'and 110 yards passing.

Lady Trojans are scheduled to
play in Troy this Friday and fin-
ish their 17-AAA schedule on
Oct. 23 in La Vega. They cur-
rently have a 17-7season record.
West beat Connally 16-14, 8-
15 and 15-6 on Oct. 2 as they
avenged their only district loss.
"We knew it would be a hard
task to beat them there, even
though they had three district
lossesgoing into the game," Lady
Trojan assistant coach Sandy
Dickerson said. "We knew they
would be up for us."
The West coach said reserve
Michelle Maler played an impor-
tant role in the win as she came
offthe bench in the decisive third
game and "did a good job serving
and setting."
The West girls then beat
Gatesville 15-4 and 15-2 last

Battle of Trojans set for Friday night
It will be a battle of Trojans at
7:30 p.m. Friday as the West
Trojans travel to Troy to meet
their Trojans in a District 17-
AAA football contest.
Coach Rick Wolfs West squad
will be trying to pick up their
first district win and second win
this season. The Trojans opened
the season with losses to Clifton
and Glen Rose before beating
Malakoff(28-0)in their final non-
district game. West opened dis-
trict with losses to La Vega,
McGregor and Gatesville.
Troy comes into the game with
a 3-3 record and 1 -2 district mark.
Troy has lost to China Spring 48-
7 and Lorena 33-10 and beat
Connally 21-7.
"T roy has been kind of a Jekyll
and Hyde team this year," the
West coach said. "You just don't
know which team will show up."
Offensively, Troy uses the
Shotgun, I and Wing T forma-
tions and they like to control the
football. "At times they will try
to pass, but mostly they will try
to control the line of scrimmage
and just run the ball at you."
Their quarterback Grant
Lambert operates the Trojans'
offensive attack. "He makes
things happen and he is an elu-
sive-type quarterback."
Defensively, Troy runs a split
defense. "They are kind ofa bend,
but don't break-type defense,"
the West coach said about
Friday's opponent. "Up front they
will give you different looks and
they have two big, strong line-
men."
Coach Wolf sees similarities
between his squad and their op-
ponent this Friday. "We match
up talent-wise with them. Both
teams are pretty comparable.
Whichever team takes care of
controlling the ball will probably
come out on top."
"We have to be able to run the
ball," he continued while adding,
"we may do some things differ-
ently on offense. Kevin Glomb
will be back this week and I think
he will help our running game
out. Hopefully this week we can
get back on the winning side."
The West junior varsity and
freshmen squads are both sched-
uled to host Troy today (Thurs-
day) at Trojan Field in West. The
freshmen teams are to play at
5:30 p.m. with the junior varsity
games beginning at 7 p.m.
