School board
tours site
for high school
By John Pcscaia
The West ISD Board of Trustees toured the new high school site
during their monthly meeting on Oct. 14.
The project coordinator Paul Svacek, from Huckabee and Associ-
ates, was at the meeting and reported that construction for the new
high school facility was currently on schedule and the crew was
supposed to start pouring concrete for a portion of the foundation
last Friday.
Svacek said the first section to be poured was located toward the
back of the new structure and measures approximately 13, 000
square feet.
Svacek then reported they would start pouring slabs every week
and concrete blocks will start going up within two to three weeks.
The contractor and the board then traveled to the site and he gave
explanations concerning what each section was going to be and he
answered questions.
When the board members reported back to the school district's
administration building, West ISD Superintendent Jack Crain
reported on the tax rate for West and compared it to the other school
districts' rates in McLennan County.
The West ISD tax rate is $1.50 and Crain reported that this rate
put the West school district's rate as eighth highest on the list of
McLennan County cities.
In the past few years, West was ranked between eleventh and
thirteenth. Crain said even though West has moved up a few spots
they are still not near the top of the list for having the highest tax
rates in the county. The highest rate in the county belongs to China
Spring with a tax rate of $1.57.
The board then listened to a presentation on the district and
campus goals from a director of each campus. The directors were
Linda Franke representing the district, Terry Stanford represent-
ing the high school, Debbie Marak representing the middle school,
and Sue Melton representing the elementary school.
Next on the agenda, the West superintendent received a letter
from McLennan Community College noting that 83 percent of the
students of the Class of 1997 from West passed their courses at
MCC. This was the highest passing rate of any high school in the
area.
The school board then gave a report on the TASB/TASA annual
convention which they attended September 25-27 in Houston.
The board also adopted a reolution recognizing 4-H members as
eligible status under 19 Texas Administrative Code Chapter 76 and
the naming of the County Extension agents as adjunct staff mem-
bers.
In personnel, the board accepted the resignation of Gregg
Waddell, who was a maintenance employee for the West ISD
campuses.
The board also accepted bids from B & B Sporting Goods and
White Sporting Goods for track and basketball equipment.

Trojans to face Hillsboro this Friday
The West Trojans will jour-
ney to Hillsboro fora 7:30 p.m.
game this Friday against the
rival Eagles in EagleStadium.
This game will match up
two teams that have had simi-
lar success this season under
the leadership of new athletic
directors and head football
coaches.
West has fashioned a 4-3
record and 0-2 District 8-AAA
mark under coach Dave
Joiner Hillsboro also has a 4-
3 record and 0-2 district mark
under new coach Bryan Erwin.
"I think everyone in town
knows more about this rivalry
than I do. the bragging rights of
the cities are very important. 1
guess the rivalry is probably the
same thing as that between
Texas and A&M. I know some-
thing about that one."
"We are both in theexactsame
stage of establishing our pro-
grams," the West coach added.
Hillsboro will feature a Wing
T offense under the direction of
senior quarterback Derek
Wilcox. David Harris, a sopho-
more tailback, is the featured
back in the Eagle offense. The
165 pound back has 4.5 speed
and is described as very quick.
Roderick Brown, a senior 175
pound wing back, has also been
very involved in the Eagle of-
fense both as a runner and re-
ceiver.
"They are predominantly a
running team," Joiner said about
this week's opponent. "Wilcox
(the Hillsboro quarterback) does
a good job of working the ball in
the backfield."
Defensively, the Eagles use a
4-3 alignment with Steven
Simmons (77) and Kevin Cham-
bers (79) anchoring their line.
Simmons is a 260 pound junior
and Chambers is a 245 pound
senior. "They are very big, strong
and physical." Jonathon Rogers,
a 190 pound freshman middle
linebacker, also is a key to the
Hillsboro defense.
"At this point," the West
coach said, "we will be play-
ing for pride and have a
chance to be a winning ball
club. "At this point, we have
to win two of our next three
games" to have a winning
season.
"There is a lot of bragging
rights involved in this one,"
he concluded. "There won't
be any problem getting any-
one up for this one."
