When our class graduated in
1959, we had the whole world at
our feet. Our motto was, "Better
Days Are Yet To Come." We were
ready to go forth and make
something of ourselves. We
thought nothing would stand in
our way and we would live
forever. Our thoughts were
probably nothing different from
graduating classes of this day
and time. But things happen and
death does come to the young
and to the ambitious.
Our class has lost, in the past
39 years, four classmates. Larry
Hardwick died of Leukemia in
1970. Gary Popp was struck and
killed in Bangkok, Thailand in
1991. Shirley Sutton Herrin as
well as Barbara Gerik Cannon
died of heart attacks. Shirley in
1994 and Barbara in 1996.
Now most recently we lost Nell

Question: Were there changes to Social Security for 1998,
or are the rules the same as in 1997 How much money can I obituary was short and really
earn and still collect my Social Security benefit? Richard R. said nothing about the Nell Ruth
Dear Richard, we knew' My friend Betty and 1
It seems that each year Social Security makes adjustments to its discussed her as well as her
many parts and this year is no different. For 1998, Social Security obituary after hearing she had
beneficiaries and supplemental Social Security income recipients Passed away- BettT brought to
will receive a 2.1% cost of living adjustment. This percentage
increase is based on the Consumer Price Index from the third
quarter 1996 through the third quarter 1997. In addition, the
maximum earnings taxable for the Old Age Survivor Disability
Income (OASDI) portion only has been increased from $65,400 to
$68,400 for 1998. A taxpayer would pay 6.20% of this amount. And,
as you recall, the Medicare portion totaling 1.45 % of earnings has no
income ceiling.
Finally, the maximum Social Security benefit for a worker retiring
at age 65 in January 1998 ha increased from $1,326 a month to
$ 1,342 a month. For someone retiring at age 62, the benefit would be
80% of this amount.
The answer to your second question regarding collecting your
Social Security benefit while still working is "it depends on how old
you are." The regulations are different if you are age 65-69 or if you
are under age 65. Let's look at each age bracket.
If you are under age 65, you can earn $9,120 a year in 1998 before
dad used to sell outside
Christian's Hardware. We would
leave the movie on Saturday
afternoon and hook a left as we
walked out of the Best Theater in
hopes Mr. Kosthoryz was selling
the most wonderful snow cones
in the whole wide world. She also
reminded me of Nell Ruth's long
beautiful pigtails that she had as
a child.
Yes, Nell Ruth died of cancer
on March 7,1998. She was put to
rest at Hillcrest Memorial
Cemetery in Omaha, Nebraska.
Her obituary said nothing about
the life she lived nor what she
accomplished in her 56 short
years. It merely mentioned when
she died, who her survivors were
and where she was to be buried.
Well, Nell Ruth was
Salutatorian of our senior class
as well as receiving the Student
Council Award that same year.
She attended TCU and Baylor
University. After college she met
and married a man with six
children and helped raise them
all, along with one of their own.
She came to our 30th class
reunion in 1989, having flown in
Jeanette
Colley
from Morris Plains, New Jersey.
Needless to say she won the
award for traveling the farthest.
At that time she had put in 23
years with AT&T and stated that
she ery'oyed golf and tennis in
her spare time. I also know that
she had the opportunity to travel
a great deal. She had visited over
half the 52 states and many
countries outside the United
States which included North
Africa.
So remember. When a person
is bom, very little can be said
because a life has really just
begun. But when a person passes
away after they've lived for some
years, so much more can be said
other then who that person was
survived by and the day they
were bom and the day they died.
Think about it.
Another Point of View
In recent weeks there has been
a number of instances of kids
killing kids, teachers and other
adults. There have been fights
where kids were maimed for life
by other kids. The reasons for
such behavior have been dis
cussed in the paper and on most
talk radio shows.
In some editorials I have read,
the writers have blamed TV
violence or parental spankings,
you begin giving back Social Security. That's equivalent to $760. If rpj^ American Academy of
you earn more than that amount, you will "give back" one dollar in Pediatrics has recently checked
Social Security benefits for every two dollars in earnings above that
amount. Another way to look at this is that you would be able to earn
up to $18,240 before you gave back all of your Social Security.
On the other hand, if you are age 65-69, in 1998 you can earn
$14,500 a year before beginning to give back any of your Social
Security benefit. At that time, though, for every dollar earned above
$14,500 you would give back one dollar in Social Security benefit for
every three dollars of earnings above that limit. Another way to look
at this is that you would be able to earn $43,500 before you would give
back all of the Social Security benefit.
Of course, once you pass age 69, there is no lim i t on earnings while
still collecting all of your Social Security benefit.

I cannot accept.
I was raised in an era where

end of the spanking. On more
than on occasion where the
misdeed involved someone
besides me, they also joined me
in the punishment. It was
understood in not just our family,
but in all of the families of my
peers that ifyou were disobedient
a spanking was far more than a
possibility. I do not recall a single
instance of a kid taking a gun or
a knife to another kid.
If the present day theories are
valid, why wasn’t there more
childhood violence 50 or 60 years
ago than there is today? I think
that the answer can be found in
looking at how families
functioned then compared to now.
Mothers and dads were
parents who took their
responsibility seriously. We were
loved, not merely tolerated. We
were given tasks to perform and
were fully expected to perform
these tasks with a minimum of
supervi sor and reminding. In our
neighborhood, there were no
gangs. They would not have been
tolerated. The adults would have
banded together and the gang
KEITH PECK
would have been disbanded
without blood shed. There would
probably have been some
punishment which would have
involved a belt or a paddle.
Today kids have no one to look
up to. There is no moral climate
that shows them what is expected
of them. Look at their heroes.
The president was looked up to
as a role model. Our president is
as immoral as can be, but his
behavior is accepted by a majority
of people. Probably the same
people who are wringing their
hands and wondering why kids
are being so violent!

The decision of a federal judge
named Susan Webber Wright, a
former law student of President
Clinton's, and a Bush appointee,
(supported by Clinton) has
aborted the trial of Paula Jones
vs Bill Clinton by saying there is
no merit to her case. Men of good
faith and common sense,
however, believe otherwise.
But I have ambivalent feelings
about the decision. First, sexual
harassment cases had gotten far
beyond the silly and dangerous
stages and were all set to go
further. Then the loaded gun was
suddenly aimed at the president
himself; and that forced the femi-
nists into a painful reevaluation
of the whole idea. So, after this
men may now be able to say more
than hello to a woman without
being hauled into court and
emasculated without a dissenting
voice being heard.
Even so, I have a sneaking
suspicion we haven't heard the
last of Paula Corbin Jones. Nor
has Bill Clinton.
What is also revealing about
this situation is that it exposed
the National Organization for
Women (NOW), for what it
actually is and what it always
has been - a liberal, if not socialist,
political organization. Contrast
their anguish and support in the
plight of Anita Hill to the way
they treated Paula Jones. Notice
an exact opposite reaction? So
their stand depends on whether
a liberal or conservative ox is
being gored.
But, after all, as most
Americans are saying to poll
takers, "It's only sex" Right! Yes,
that's what they are saying; but,
no that is not right. It’s not really
about sex. It’s about integrity,
character, honesty, morality and
fidelity, and it is about setting
high standards of behavior for
the multitude who believe their
behavior needs to be no better
than that of the leader of our
country.
And who speaks to that! No, it
is not Kenneth Starr, a native of
West Texas and San Antonio.
His job is clearly defined by law
as an independent investigator
and he cannot, according to that
law, do much more than defend
himself, personally as best he
can. But he is no match for the
multitude of flacks and spin
doctors at the disposal of the
President. This is evident in the
polls - which show a man
denounced, vilified and being
tried in the national media. It is
all smoke and mirrors - but the
people believe it just as they are
taught to believe anything
government teaches in public
schools.
But where are the people who
should be defending this
honorable man who has taken on
the thankless, degrading task of
finding truth in a city (country)
where truth is whatever you
believe it is or what can be proven
in court. He is denounced by his
opponents for doing his job;
nobody in Washington is
standing up for him. Or, if they
do, the media is seeing to it that
they are not heard outside the
rooms in which they speak.
Finally, then, it is not the
Republican party, either. The
loyal opposition, so to speak, has
become more loyal than opposi-
tion. Certainly they seem to be
unable to find anything the
opposition does they can seri-
ously oppose. In fact, several in
leadership position in the GOP
have joined Democrats in calling
BILL
Prince
for an end to investigations by
Mr. Starr. Do they know there
may be final revelations that will
bring a pox on both parties?
Maybe.
But the truth is that this
whole mess is no longer about
Clinton or Starr. The public
already made up its mind about
thatduring the trial in the media.
That is a shame, too, but that's
the way it's done today.
Now the problem is in the court
of the Republican party. And how
it handles this is of crucial
importance to the GOP now, and
for many years to come. Is it
capable ofgovemingas a majority
partv in Congress, or will it
continue to drift further to the
left and finally join the ranks of
the socialists? Such was the fate
of the Democrat party.
All the actions of mice and
men are still a mystery to us -
but somewhat predictable. It
should cause us great anguish to
watch as both parties practice
the art of self destruc tion, and in
the process, load us all on the
Titanic and hit an iceberg.
Special Thanks
